In-state recruits not a big deal in North Dakota

I guess Sac can argue they recruit in state to save money, but California also has one seventh of the U.S. population and a pretty low median age. If your going to see a lot of talent for a reasonable price, California is the place.

I feel sorry for any out of state kid who elects North Dakota. Minus Gillette, Wy. Not many places worse for scenery. On a good note the women are big, so you get more for your money.

How many from their almost home state, Minnesota? I'm too damn tired to look.

At NDSU, home of the last two FCS national title trophies, the Bison grabbed the majority of their 21 kids from Wisconsin (6), Minnesota (3) and Florida (3).

So much for "recruiting more in Minnesota".

Damn, thought it'd be more than that.

really, coppere griz you would rather play for a team that has missed the play offs 2 of the last 3 year than to play for the 2 time defending nat. champs and probably the favorites to win it again this year. i would really like to hear all the reasons for that one.

Ryan Mckinley and Treshawn Favors would be better guys to ask.

Because, despite ALL that, you still have to spend your time in Fargo.  :D

As this column points out, North Dakota and North Dakota State combined for four in-state recruits this year, including a transfer returning home. If the Griz recruited like that, but managed to win back to back championships, while moving up a division no less, would the wins make the lack of Montana kids on the roster acceptable? Sure doesn't seem to keep Bison fans away.

I don't know if any of you watch much ND high school football (and why would you?), but the talent level in ND isn't good enough to support much more than 3-5 FCS "SCHOLARSHIP" athletes per year. The smaller schools in the state just don't produce consistently, and even the level of play at the AAA level is down. What leads to the higher number of North Dakotans at NDSU (and to a smaller but similar level at UND) in total has been the walkon program. Walk-on athletes have been an underrated key to NDSU's success since Bohl's arrival.

Also, remember that both NDSU and UND are located in border cities, and both have recruited the Twin Cities (UM is the only D1 program in the state) and Wisconsin (Bucky is the only scholarship program in the state) heavily for years. In fact, the one surprise to me when both schools went D-1 was that the recruiting bases did not change all that much from the D-2 days. A lot of the core contributors to NDSU's title run came from it's core recruiting area that it has had for several years.

I also played in the Badlands Bowl on the ND side several years ago...the year I played we lost by two scores and the talent difference was significant (in favor of Montana). However a quick check shows that ND has won 3 of the last 8 games...so it hasn't been as one sided of a game recently. I would think that Montana still should be favored every year though.

To all those with the "in state talent" doesn't matter attitude...

Count the number of national championships we've won under out of state quarterbacks. :ugeek:

+1..."the grass is always greener.....ah... NOT! It's best to stick with what you know in life and most likely in football too. Our blend has seemed to work out fine the last 25 years. :egriz:

It's probably not fair to write off the North Dakota preps as somehow less athletic than the Montana preps. North Dakota has two thirds Montana's population. Montana struggles to string together as many AA-sized schools as one might find in the 40 miles between Spokane and Coeur d' Alene.
North Dakota is going to struggle even more and the benches aren't going to be very deep as a result. Same for South Dakota. That doesn't mean there isn't talent there.

True, but your comments are very Oakland Raider-like nonetheless!

There is some talent just not a lot according to Rivals.com. The three states that you mentioned are the most lean in the country in terms of college level football talent.

NDSU has 31 Minnesotans 21 IN STATE NODAKS...so...this thread is wrong http://www.gobison.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=2400&SPID=695&SPSID=11845" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Nobody cares. The template is set, and I'll be the only one to recognize your factual post.

thank you. we dont understand, NDSU has a lot more North Dakota players than we thought (plus more walk on's) we also would like to see NDSU attack the Minneapolis/Chicago area more to be honest. 58% of NDSU"s incoming academic class is Minnesota. Point is NDSU and Coach Bohl visit's every single north dakota high school, NDSU will always get the top 3-4 north dakota kids, thats about it.

I wouldnt be ripping on NDSU or Fargo for lifestyle, downtown Fargo is a party and 30 miles away there are 1000 lakes and plenty of beautiful women... you need to get out more. Oh NDSU tailgating is a party.
