Idaho State Facing $16 M Deficit

Idaho State says it is facing a $16 million budget deficit because of COVID impacts and other factors (university-wide, not just in athletics). Anybody have any idea what kinds of impacts COVID has had at Montana?

Last I heard, the Montana University System anticipated roughly an $18 million shortfall. As an academic, I can tell you only that's it's been pretty ugly in many places, largely due to uncertainty. Many universities have shut down all hiring out of anxiety regarding fall enrollment and budget; some have even gone so far as to rescind offers that were accepted, and others have rescinded graduate admission offers.

Surprised to hear it's only $18MM!

That was from a couple weeks back at least, so I'm not sure if that estimate has changed.

This may be an opportunity for the University administration to display their talents and creativity to excel in very difficult times, Go Griz

Might also be a good time for the BOR to develop a formal plan to eliminate or convert to junior college status several schools within the university system.

I understand there's been a tremendous amount of discussion about what to do about the impending falloff in college attendance. Thus far, all I can find from one end of the country to the other by both the media and the individual schools are no shit Sherlock observations such as these:

Many people on this site discussed at length what the University of Montana has to do in order to attract high school seniors to Missoula. One constant, in my very lengthy college experience spanning fifty years, is simply a user friendly environment. Those schools that emerge from this Pandemic on solid financial ground are going to be the ones that make kids feel wanted and valued. Pretty simple actually. Believe it or not, the kids could give a rats ass about their professors credentials or how large their vitae happens to be. Most kids just use a fucking permanent marker and line through a class as one more bullshit obstacle out of the way to a degree when it's finished.

No doubt true, but a college education is supposed to expand one's mind and frame of reference. The world is a complicated place & it doesn't hurt for one to take a required course and see it as an opportunity to gain more awareness of one's world, and an understanding of why it is the way it is. Otherwise, why have 4-yr schools, when a 2-yr hands on program would fit the person for a narrow slot, ignorant of what makes the world go around? I could go on, but you know all this. No, it's not "bullshit" to take a course not directly related to your employment goals. Learn what it has to offer, you dolt!

The Peace Corp, the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Merchant Marines, a mission will provide an epiphany sitting through a bloated, self-serving egomanics class can never accomplish with a young mind, but you already know this. The realty that the U of M refused to accept prior to this Pandemic is entrenched in your argument. The kids have been voting against your stance with their feet for the last decade. It is only going to get worse, but you know this.

I am a former Peace Corps volunteer; I have traveled overseas numerous times. Maybe my experiences were different than yours but my four years of college certainly provided me with every bit as much knowledge and 'epiphany' as my out-of-country adventures did. I wouldn't trade any of them.

Nor would I trade any of my experiences, but that's pretty much a given since they're in the past. I would like to have each and every American be required to read The Ugly American and dig out their old eight tracks and crank up American Woman by the Guess Who for a few days as they watch the world burn over the next few months. Then perhaps a few will start facing the new reality and wonder why they didn't start planning sooner. This fall is going to be too late to adjust fire.

As one of my future daughter-in-laws received her bachelors from the University of Denver and her masters from Idaho State, I appreciate comparing what schools do to validate why kids choose a school.

This is interesting.
