I Want to Know about KRAL FERCH

Kral Ferch was from Livingston where his dad was the coach duirng I believe the early 80's. His brother Shan Ferch also played there with the team being known as the running Rangers. Their games were more like a track meet with the scores usually being in the 80's to 100 point range.
We lived in Livingston from 77-89 & got to watch the Ferch brothers do their version of Michael Jordan as both of them did some fantastic leaps & slam dunks in high school and for the Bobcats.
While in High School, the Park High gym was always packed. When the Ferch brothers played for MSU, their gym was always packed as the Cats were a blast to Watch. Their run & gun style of play was exciting to watch compared to what I consider the boring slow pace that the Griz played.
I sure wish Coach K could find a couple of players like the Ferch brothers, then maybe the Mens Games might be a little more exciting as it would give the Griz a solid inside- outside game with some quickness to it.

Good post, thanks.

Do you know anything about the dunk against st. john's

A great dunk! He dunked over one of the St. John players from the corner off of two feet, one handed.

In the game game against S. Johns, Kral had the ball on a fast break and was dribbling down the left side of the paint. Walter Berry had some defense on him but all of a sudden Kral cradled the ball in his left arm and slammed it right over a stunned Walter Berry. It was an awesome dunk.

OK YOU HAD TO ASK :P :P :P :P :P :P

The single most exiting play I have ever witnessed in college ball. I was in school in Bozeman studying Architecture. I had this boom box that actually had a small TV in it that I would bring over to the Cheever Hall studio That is where myself and about 6 other architecture students watched this. MSU had a bad record that year, but jelled and came together at the end of the season and won their last 6 or so conference games and swept the conference tourney. They went into the tourney with a sub .500 record. They were featured in USA Today as the little college who should not make it into the tourney. This MSU team was COCKY and brazen. The drew the number one team in the nation St. Johns which featured The player of the year Walter Barry and the after fore mentioned Willie Glass (a 6-6 smooth as silk athletic small forward/guard.). St John’s all week talking about the cakewalk of a game they had in the first round. If I remember right Walter Barry (who was not an all American academic candidate) even was quoted as asking if Montana was in the United States, or Canada. MSU played them Tough, the had the lead a couple times and never let St. Johns get ahead by more than 6-7 points. During one of MSU come back runs in the second half Tony Hampton got a steal and shovel passed it to a Streaking Kral Ferch. Ferch was maybe 6-4, but could jump out of the Gym. Kral was ahead of the pack with the exception of Willie Glass who got back on defense and had great position between Kral and the basket. 2-3 other St. Johns players were right on Kral’s tail. MSU had been out hustling St Johns all night long and the national announcers were going crazy. The announcers go something like " Ferch has a break away! Oh but look Glass is back, no way Ferch will take it in on the All-American! " That’s what the National guy's thought anyone and everyone who had ever seen a MSU basketball game knew better! Ferch went up, and Glass went up, Glass looked like he was going to get a full palm on the ball, but Kral kept rising and Glass kind of just hung there, ferch went right over the top of slammed it home, landed turned and was heading back down the court and Glass stood under the basket shaking his head. All the announcers could say was something like "Can you believe THAT”.

About Kral Ferch: He was a 6-4 (OK he was listed at 6-4) forward who played basketball in high school for Livingston. His dad was the coach, and his brother Shan played with him for Junior and senior year. Off the court Kral was a quiet, deeply religious guy that was involved with many positive activities. On the court he was the most aggressive basketball player I have seen in the blue and gold. He never questions the coach, but he was fearless on the court. If you ever met his dad you know where he got his kind of split personality attitude.

:o :o Everytime a shot would go up the brothers would come running from half court and jump over the back and get the rebound. The only playing they did where they were not over the back was when they were playing the fiddle. I think they played old time fiddle very well. :o :o

Really? You must have missed Dan Trammel's last second put back slam in the 2002 Big Sky Tournament! :)

Obviously there have been a lot of great plays over the years. But the one thing that stands out about the Trammel play -- it decided the game, a tournament game.

Granted from your perspective the Tramel dunk was great, but what mede Ferch's better was the anticipation, we MSU fans saw it coming, the national anouncer said it could not happeb, it was against an all american know for his defence, but most it was over the top and absolutly dominating.

I didn't see the Ferch dunk, but I'm sorry, In my mind nothing beats the Dan Trammel dunk. He was literally sitting on top of Casey Reynolds shoulders before grabbing the ball above the top of the square and throwing it down. Not to mention it was the exclamation point on erasing a 16 point Bobcat lead with about 9 minutes left in the game.

I love the Durham stall. It always gives me hope. I also like the Durham Feb. Fade that also always gives me hope. Cats please, please keep this great man around for years. I also like the Inside outside game the cats play minus the inside of course.

PS did I mention I love that Kramer can't start the season fast or if he does he can't finish fast. Old 6 win Kramer. :D

from the description of the two the ferch dunk was better imo - casey renolds was no all american and i doubt he was in a posation to defend

No, but he damn sure should have been in a position to block out Trammel. Everyone knew hippy Bell was going to miss, but I don't think anyone in the Brick saw Trammel doing that before it happened. Much as I get nauseous every time I think about it, it was definitely one of the most amazing plays I have ever seen in person, especially when you consider all the ramifications of the play.

For all-out "amazing-ness" though, I'll take Kral's dunk for reasons already stated.

Didn't Ferch try to play pro volleyball somewhere. I thought he went to California and tried it, but could be wrong. The kid could jump.
