HS Athletic Disparity

My favorite sportswriter wrote this piece last week or so, and it seems dead on for our area. I'd be interested to hear if you think it would apply to Montana HS sports as well. Keep in mind that we have a major problem with one HS allegedly recruiting illegally in Samoa and throwing sanctions back in CIF's face. It's particularly embarassing to me since the coach involved was my Pop Warner defensive coordinator (fortunately I played offense). The penalties are perceived to rival NCAA sanctions, and they're being ignored. We also have a private school that's perceived to be "recruiting" as well. Anyways, I'd love to hear your opinions.

HS Athletic Disparity

Without even reading the article, all I have to say is it's nice to be in Montana. Californians please stay there.

One of the biggest reasons for disparity in the San Joaquin Athletic Association/Tri-City Athletic League ("Tri" for Lodi, Stockton, and Tracy) is the illegal recruiting that Stockton-Franklin has been doing (the illegal snatching of athletes from Stockton-St. Mary's and from Samoa). They were the SJAA's doormat for decades before Tom Verner (erstwhile defensive coordinator for the defunct Lodi Rams Pop Warner team) took over and started taking shortcuts to improve the program. The CIF had already ordered forfeits of every game this season over the Samoa recruiting flap this year, and Verner kept thumbing his nose at the CIF. It just came back to bite him in the rear. KCRA-3 in Sacramento is reporting that Franklin just got SMUed today. About freaking time, if you ask me. How they got away with this cr@p for so long is beyond me. Now they pay for it.
