How Long

Well-known member
The question now becomes how long. How long before we get an announcement from KH about a new direction for the program? Does MD stay or does he announce his retirement? How long before Rolls craps down his leg with some new edict? How long before the NCAA finally clears the program of any wrong doing? How long before season ticket sales take a nose dive (there are many fair weather fans). Ohhhh how long? I have to keep reminding myself that it is always darkest before the dawn. Right now it seems pretty dark.

I have a feeling....just a feeling....that the NCAA thing will drag on until at least after fall camp. I get the sense that the NCAA will not stop investigating until they find something....they don't want to look bad after all!!

As for MD and changes to the program - no way MD retires and no way KH dictates a change in direction. The Griz are one season removed from the semis!!! The reality is that the BSC is incredibly tough and teams are finally catching up to the Griz in talent. It should be noted that in reality the Griz are probably only a two loss team if JJ played this year...just sayin'

Copper....how long? Depends on Main Hall and Engstrom is the man. Could be a long time, sorry to say.

If we don't make a change in direction we could be headed the way of Youngstown State. Mediocrity breeds mediocrity. If MD gets through his 2nd year at .500 or worse and we make the change after that season how long before the new coach can bring in his players and move us in the right direction? How hard is it to recruit against a coach who may only be around another year? The Griz need a long term solution to their head coaching position and I don't see how MD is that 5 year solution.

RE better not take to long. With enrollment dropping off like a box of rocks to the tune of 300 in coming freshman and his budget needing necessary cuts of I believe 1.8% per department not only is the football program is trouble but every employee at the University. Those 300 or so kids stay at the University for 4-5 years.........thats a lot of cash! Not to mention the football revenue that will begin to drop off and probably even GSA. I mean why do people want to contibute to something its own leadership doesn't have interest in. He is a horrible administrator IMO and has dug a big hole.

As far as MD is concerned I have no idea of how the players feel. On the outside it looks like the best thing would be for him to retire. His lack of instinct and game management seem obvious.

I believe the NCAA has left the house and what they have or haven't found is yet to be communicated. If in fact the report shows what might be considered "minor" infractions it would confirm what some say about RE. He did a poor job of administering in a difficult situation. I would hope the report would be issued sooner than later so the AD dept. has some direction. Prediction would be by years end.

I think the JJ trial will have alot of bearing on things. Actually I'm bit surprised it hasn't been dismissed because the likely hood of conviction is remote. I feel horrible for both JJ and the girl. The trial regardless of outcome will have a negative impact for both of them.

I think the football team gave it they're all. They had to fight a media which continually hammered them from all sides, Main Hall which has yet to make any positive comments about the nature and character of MOST of these young men, they fought thru injury, and rumbled with some pretty good football teams, they lost they're OC, DC, coach, quarterback, and AD and in the end it was to much for them to over come. Gwen can say what she wants but these are outstanding young men and deserve better.

In conclusion to these ramblings I for one am a bit down about all this. Not only for the football program but the University as a whole and IMO the longer RE stays we won't recover for some time.

Speaking of Kent Haslam...where is he? Following in the footsteps of a Jim O'Day who was forever visible and vocal I'm wondering if KH is maybe a figment of our - and Engstrom's - imagination?

Seems to me you did not take the loss hard at all and that you have your head in the sand or up your arse. In my biased opinion - the questions are logical. If this season was good with you - maybe you should move to the other side of the state where mediocrity is welcome. I for one - would like to get headed back in the right direction.

Coach Delaney is a good guy and stepped up when we needed him. His contract provided some stability for the program and allowed recruiting to continue on that basis. We will face the lame duck issue sooner than later and the program deserves sooner so we can get on with things. Recuiritng requires stability before athletes and their families will want to commit. A third retirement would be as beneficial to the program as coming aboard in tough times.

The coaching question is quite hard. On one hand it would seem that we as fans and UM as an institution should show Coach D as much loyalty as he has shown to the University, the team and the fans.

On the other hand, this years results are way off what might be considered as acceptable and much of the accountability has to reside with the coaches. You also have to ask the question as to whether Coach D is the long term answer as head coach. I think in any case the Griz face a coaching transition in the not too distant future, it may be best to simply get it out of the way and move on. Perhaps Coach D could become associate director of the GSA and spend a few years working with the fans and donors. This might be a way to recognize his contribution to Grizzly football and let a new coach turn things around.

February is going to be huge a month for the GRIZ, and JJ.

JJ's trial is in February.

I believe the results of the NCAA will be revealed before signing day.
