How did Albany...?

Even get this far? I mean they totally S*** the bed last night against SDSU. How could a team that pathetic even beat Idaho?

Clearly that was one of the worst beatdowns in recent FCS playoff history. Goes to show the strength of schedules and imbalance of playing level of the various conferences. SDSU will probably win it it all this year.

Not so fast my friend. Folks seem to disregard the advantage of being at home for the playoffs. Shortened schedule due to travel. Reduced sleep, less time for rehab and in general - less preparation. Don’t forget the cold and that Albany played in done last week. Yes, SD is good. They are beatable though. Griz finish their work today hopefully and then let’s see where the chips fall. I think they match up very well with SDSU.

Maybe someone smarter than me can comment on whether the SDSU DBs are stellar receivers or if the Albany quarterback consistently threw into the wrong coverage. Or other? I only played at the high school level about 55 years ago.

The QB was somewhat limited because USDSU was hell bent on taking the guy who torched Idaho for 200 yards and a couple of scores, out of the Albany offense. Didn't help that he wasn't sharp at all, sometimes that happens at the worst of times. You can't hand the ball over as often as they did an hope to make it close. It did appear that the USDSU Dbs were sitting on routes.

The vaunted Albany run defense seemed to take the might off as well and for sure, they haven't come up against a big ten line during their season. Their pass defense, while only a fractional vaunt, was even worse. And the punt return - the Albany special teams guys looked like the Keystone Cops - literally flying by the guy, flailing arm tackles, which was the theme of most of the night and getting knocked off their feet by the force of the air pressure as players ran by them.

That said, I'm not sure Idaho would have faired much better.

Well, the Albany QB threw into coverage for 3 picks in the 1H, two which resulted in TD drives that were very short, SDSU had one punt return TD in the 1H and the scoop and score fumble return to start the 2H.

Now, not to take away from SDSU, but that punt bounced right into his hands and so did that fumble... Just perfect along with nobody on Albany being able to tackle.

I wasn't pissed, but if it were McDowell playing like he had never heard of the sport before that game, I would be losing my mind.

It's a couple things.

1st, Idaho has been underperforming for weeks, and McCoy has been incredibly inconsistent. Dude went something like 5-20 in the 2nd half against Albany. Albany simply hit the big shots they needed to, but I don't think they win that game if McCoy doesn't implode late.

2nd, SDSU is a horrendous matchup for Albany (they're tough for any team, but Albany in particular is not built to compete with the rabbits). Their run game is just not good enough, and you can't just chuck up prayers against one of the best secondaries in the FCS all day and expect to win.

3rd, I will say there's merit to the idea that Albany's defense was overrated. Villanova clearly had the athletes in the trenches to compete with SDSU, but Albany was bullied all damn night. And yet Albany murdered 'Nova when they played. Goes back to point #2, matchups are everything.
