Man, looking over the M's offensive stats is a depressing exercise. In fact, I advise you to hit the "Back" button and not read any more of this post.
Name///Batting Avg///On Base Percentage///Slugging Percentage
Ichiro: .177/.271/.258 Ugh.
Lopez: .279/.313/.492 Good numbers - love the SLG%
Ibanez: .288/.338/.441 Decent; but not what you want from a #3 hitter.
Sexson: .246/.306/.456 What happened to his strike zone judgement?
Beltre: .154/.267/.154 I'm going to puke.
Everett: .213/.339/.404 I just puked.
Johjima: .340/.415/.532 Ok, the dude is good. Now move him to the 4 hole.
YuBet: .250/.265/.396 Saves enough runs with the glove that it doesn't matter.
Reed: .263/.293/.421 Patience running out.
So, that's it. We've got one guy hitting over .300. He also happens to be the only guy slugging over .500 (although Lopez is close) and the only guy getting on base 4/10 of the time. This offense is bad, bad, bad. Look at the on base percentages!
Ichiro, Beltre and Everett are killing this team right now. Ichiro and Beltre are the two highest paid guys on the team and they are simply not pulling their weight - hopefully they snap out of it soon.
Reed had better get it going. Adam Jones skipped AA and is in Tacoma this year. They won't hesitate to slide him into the starting lineup next year if Reed doesn't show some serious improvement with the bat.
Word is that my boy Chris Snelling is wayyy ahead of schedule in his rehab and is likely to see game action soon. Crazy Carl Everett had better watch out - after Snelling runs a month of .340/.440/.500 in Tacoma it will be hard to keep him out of a Seattle uniform.
