How bad has the M's offense been?

Man, looking over the M's offensive stats is a depressing exercise. In fact, I advise you to hit the "Back" button and not read any more of this post.

Name///Batting Avg///On Base Percentage///Slugging Percentage

Ichiro: .177/.271/.258 Ugh.
Lopez: .279/.313/.492 Good numbers - love the SLG%
Ibanez: .288/.338/.441 Decent; but not what you want from a #3 hitter.
Sexson: .246/.306/.456 What happened to his strike zone judgement?
Beltre: .154/.267/.154 I'm going to puke.
Everett: .213/.339/.404 I just puked.
Johjima: .340/.415/.532 Ok, the dude is good. Now move him to the 4 hole.
YuBet: .250/.265/.396 Saves enough runs with the glove that it doesn't matter.
Reed: .263/.293/.421 Patience running out.

So, that's it. We've got one guy hitting over .300. He also happens to be the only guy slugging over .500 (although Lopez is close) and the only guy getting on base 4/10 of the time. This offense is bad, bad, bad. Look at the on base percentages!

Ichiro, Beltre and Everett are killing this team right now. Ichiro and Beltre are the two highest paid guys on the team and they are simply not pulling their weight - hopefully they snap out of it soon.

Reed had better get it going. Adam Jones skipped AA and is in Tacoma this year. They won't hesitate to slide him into the starting lineup next year if Reed doesn't show some serious improvement with the bat.

Word is that my boy Chris Snelling is wayyy ahead of schedule in his rehab and is likely to see game action soon. Crazy Carl Everett had better watch out - after Snelling runs a month of .340/.440/.500 in Tacoma it will be hard to keep him out of a Seattle uniform.

Truly it is pathetic. After watching the Texas game last night you just can't help but think that this is a .500 at best. If they were ever able to get all facets of the game to show up on the same night, maybe you'd have something.

Biz - you were right about Rizz' mancrush on Bloomquist. I found myself laughing last night when he started raving about ol' "Boom-Boom".

Can you believe Beltre is making $13 million? I got into the wrong business.

The Bloomie-love just kills me. Even when he belly-flopped and landed five feet short of the fly ball that he was trying to catch in center last week, they still wouldn't criticize him.

"Boy, you just can't fault the effort on that play by Willie Bloomquist!"

Ummm...Yeah, Rick, I actually can fault the effort. He landed five feet short of the fricking ball! If he had just let it hit the ground, picked it up on the hop and threw it back into the infield it would have been a single instead of the three-bagger that it turned into. But no - Willie is so "gritty" that he has to get his uniform dirty every night, no matter the cost.

I think that Willie has unflattering pictures of Howard Lincoln or Mike Hargrove. Maybe both, in bed with a lamb or something. I cannot understand why he gets the positive PR and playing time that he gets.

Beltre just looks scared.

And then last night happens, good to see the guys wake up in the last two innings!

Turned on the game when it was 6-2 and watched the come back happen, good stuff. Interesting thing is in the clutch it was Ichiro (4-4) Beltre, Everett, Sexson and Ibanez with some key hits. Congrats Ms!

That comeback was nothing short of unbelievable - especially from what we've seen from this offense so far this year. Let's hope they catch fire from this.

On a side note, there cannot be a team in baseball that lets the other team load the bases more than the M's. Seems like it happens multiple times per game, though they do a good job of getting out of it with minimal damage.

Holy crap, Eddie's gotta go. Do you think the Ms could trade him for a bag of peanuts? 4 walks to blow the lead, terrible, you're supposed to be the damn closer!!!!

I've also got to question Hargrove going to Eddie, I know you're supposed to put in your closer in a tie game in the 9th but Sorioano has been playing much better this year, keep the guy in!

What a terrible way to lose the game, Eddie's past his prime, Putz or Soriano for closer, dump this loser.

The offense isn't nearly as bad as the "closer".

You've got that right. Eddie looks like he is out of gas. The guy is throwing 86-87 mph batting practice fastballs out there. His breaking pitches have no bite and his fastball has no movement at all. The only way he can succeed is with pin-point location. He has a four inch band around the strike zone to play with and he knows it. If he catches any more of the zone, he will get pounded. He has to nibble at the edges and hope that he gets the calls from the ump. That's a recipe for a lot of walks and that's what we got last night.

Ugly, ugly, ugly.

I love Soriano in the stopper role and think that Putz is pretty close to ideal as a closer. I'd use Eddie in the LOOGY (lefty only out guy) role, but that's just me. The M's will trot him out there for another six weeks before they make a move - probably to the DL.

For every single good move that Bavasi has made, he's made another very, very bad one. Picking up Eddie's option in the off season was one of the worst - he tailed off badly at the end of last season and is pitching with a partially torn rotator cuff. If we had taken the $6 million that we are paying him and the Washburn money, we could have had Millwood in the rotation. Uggh.

Drop Eddie to the bullpen, I agree GW. That is sobering to think about, Millwood or Eddie, ugh.... :beer2:

1st Willie is from bremerton, which is only a bridge away from Tacoma or Seattle, so he is untouchable. For those of us who chanted Blowers Power back in the '95 series Willie is untouchable for proximity.

The relievers are truly a problem, but fixable in the stretch. if the m's can stay 5 games back in August, which may be feasible, it might be one of those seasons when you had tickets when no one else was there.

Seattle is a 1 sport at a time town - works for pros and college, they can't live with more than 1 good team at a time. if the Seahawks are good the Mariners and Sonics will suffer. and it is a round robin.

2002 you should be thanking your lucky stars the M's are struggling on the field, and attendance is down. Go to every game you can and savor it, drink it all in as you get god seats close. Get a min-game package so you can get priority on a playoff package. Believe me, baseball playoffs are an experience for a lifetime, well worth the memories of a lifetime.

Sadly, you are right. Dysfunctional organizations make poor personnel decisions based on crappy reasoning all the time. The M's will keep trotting Wee-Willy and his sub .300 on base percentage, mediocre defense and all around suckitude onto the field to the tune of 350-400 at bats per year. All because he graduated from an area high school.

I really wish the Howard Lincoln/Chuck Armstrong era would end soon. I can't stand the attitude that they've instilled in this franchise. I have a feeling that big changes are just around the corner - the team is drawing some very sparse crowds and someone is going to catch hell for that. It'll probably be Bavasi but to me, the problem lies a little further up the org chart. As long as the Linc-Strong duo is calling the shots, it won't matter who the GM is - poor personnel decisions will continue to be made.

I went to the Detroit game on Friday and watched the rest of the series on TV. This team will not sniff the playoffs.

Thank God for Tivo, I recorded all three games and watched them on fast forward. The Tigers look good, but come on! If the Ms actually tried to get a few guys around the bases before the 8th inning they might've won a few of those games.

Also what was up with putting Nageotte in on Sunday? Right there that was what cost them the game.

Just watching 2nite's game and the sox are all over Moyer, hopefully he gets control quickly or it's going to be another long night.

Well, the offense exploded for 3 runs last night as the M's were WAXED. The new target of my ire: Richie Sexson. The guy has one job - hit home runs - and he is on pace to hit about 13 this year.

I just rented the 40-year Old Virgin and he hit more home runs than mis-named Sexson. Please give up on the M's and resume posting in the Mens Room.

After all this they actually win the 3 game series against the defending World champs. A few notes:

-Washburn has put together a couple of very good starts. He is pitching better than anyone on the staff including Moyer and Putz.
-Bloomquist should be the everyday CF
-I almost crapped my pants when I saw Guardado warming up in the 8th.
-This team needs a day off

On to Camden Yard.

They really need to put Reed on the 15 day DL and let that wrist heal. He obviously can't generate any bat speed with his wrists right now and he's trying to compensate with more torque from his torso. His swing is too damn long and has too many holes in it right now. Make the guy sit and get healthy.

I'd call up Choo and platoon him in center with - GAG - Willy until Reed is back. Choo is on fire in AAA right now - hitting .364, with power and is drawing a ton of walks.

Washburn is exactly the type of pitcher that some have been saying Safeco is designed for - a lefty flyball pitcher that doesn't walk a lot of guys. I still don't like the signing due to the length of the contract, but he should be good for a couple of years anyway.
