Happy New Year Griz Nation, we can now put 2012 behind us and while there is a ton of uncertainty ahead for our beloved Griz there’s also a lot of upside and potential for great things to come. By no means to I expect everything to be rosy and bright, however I have faith in the drive and resiliency of this year’s team. And here are a few reasons why:

1. Have you looked at the 2013 senior class? On offense: Oiland, Hines, Poehls, Kistler, Hines, Pierson, Warren, & Maguire. On defense: Goodwin, Bienemann, Tully, Kanongata’a, Miles, Tripp, Coyle, Rominger, & Murray. On offense you see we’ve got our three best/most experienced O-linemen who will be rounding out their Griz careers and looking at a shot to keep playing on Sundays. The Grizzly OL has been stout and steamrolled its way for a lot of great running backs. The talent is there and with all the turnover of the last few years it’s been one steady constant. Before anything else, give me a strong and confident O-line to build an offense around, this team has it. On defense one could easily argue some of the best players will be seniors, Bienemann, Tripp, Coyle, and JP. The amount of senior leadership SHOULD be very strong with this group. I say should because leadership is earned through the actions and examples of these men, they’ve got a long off-season to reflect and build this. It’s vital to have, the 2013 team needs this. I believe the team has it, many of these seniors have a fire and passion to motivate and help everyone around them get better. I hope that all of the players, especially the leaders on this team have learned from 2012. Far too many times did I see those who should be showing strong determination in the face of adversity lose control and thus weaken the confidence of all of those who look up to them.

2. The QB situation has time to play itself out. Looking back at 2012 our QB situation was a mess, largely due to the uncertainty of Jordan Johnson’s status. In 2013 that issue won’t be there, by the time spring ball starts we will presumably know Jordan’s fate and where the team stands with potential QBs. Looking at just the 4 on the roster now we’ll be able to see who is the best fit for the offense. Depending on what Gragg and Kfense have put together it’ll be wide open and it will allow the best QB to win the job. Look out for Gustafson, I know the scout team kids and many outgoing seniors were raving about what a QB he could become.

3. The coaches, team, and administration have felt the same pain as all of us and then some. Do you all realize that the 2013 season has started already for the Grizzlies? Think about the amount of work that goes into a season, right now the players are lifting and working out, in a few weeks “winter conditioning” starts, and the guys will be hosting/touring recruits for the next few months as well. When you take into account the amount of prep-work and dedication these guys put into a single season, starting right now, you know this last season has put an extra fire in everyone’s belly. These guys are going have a framework to analyze the shortcomings of 2012 and they’ve got to be coming into 2013 with the desire to not have that kind of a repeat. The old saying, “you learn from your mistakes,” stands out to me here. These are smart players with an experienced staff – the letdown of 2012 should build the foundation for what motivates this team to improve and move forward.

4. This group of players and coaches find themselves in a unique position with a great opportunity to become THE group that takes the crucible moment that was the 2012 season and turn things around for the program as a whole. This squad has a chance to etch itself into Grizzly history as the group that helped get things back on track. I would be willing to bet that long after memories fade of many Grizzly teams that achieved the “status quo” success we’ve seen in the past – a team that put the program back on track will stand above many others. These guys have that chance, to be remembered as the team that bounced back/saved Grizzly football/etc.

5. Distance makes the heart grow fonder. Have we, as a fanbase, become too complacent with the ongoing success of Grizzly football? 2012 sucked as a fan, to watch the team I love have its most difficult season (on and off the field) that I readily recall. After this last year I know that I will cherish wins, success, and cheering for the Griz just a little more – knowing that a return to greatness will make 2013 even more fun.

6. This team is deep, and the 2012 freshman class which has been heralded as one of the better in Griz history will either be returning as sophomores with plenty of in-game experience or RS freshman looking to make their impact for the Griz. In the recent GF Tribune article on the 2013 Griz it was pointed out that very few of the team’s 2-deep is graduating. The amount of experience and potential that this team returns is impressive.

So what does all of this wishful thinking / sugary hope get? Absolutely nothing. This team has all of the potential in the world and I believe a championship-caliber roster but that equates to a grand total of zero wins. There’s plenty of uncertainty and nervous feelings in the air, however as I see it these men of the 2013 Grizzlies can go as far as they want – if they adapt, improve, and stay focused. If this team focuses on controlling only the circumstances they can control themselves, and not allow the external distractions to hit them, the sky is the limit. 2013 will not be without very difficult tests and challenges but I’m happy to support this team more than ever.

Happy New Year Griz Nation and GO GRIZ

All great points, but this is my favorite and the most poignant. THIS is what, in 10 chapters and various posts, I have tried to express about football. It IS a metaphor for life. Successes eventually mean nothing without losses to contrast them to. Great endzone catches become routine without failed attempts and incompletions. THIS is what I love about the 2012 season. It brought back reality, humility, character and something to spice up our future success. I look forward to many people eating their words about Delaney and all of us savoring great plays and more wins with renewed excitement.

I thought 2010 sucked too w/o the playoffs and did it change the general fan bases' complacency? No. But I actually believe the expectation that the Griz should make the playoffs every year is what makes an elite program.

I like our line next year. They will likely be the best in the conference. I really hope we can develop some depth there this year though. We have a lot of guys coming off their redshirt this next year. I'm hoping that they can step up, get in the rotation, and get the experience they need to effectively replace the seniors in 2014. If we want to rebuild this team and maintain success, we need to be consistently solid up front with depth coming up through the ranks. Speed and talent at the skill positions is great, but it means much less if the QB doesn't have time to make good decisions and your recivers don't have time to run their routes. Look at the best offenses in the country. They consistently have a dominant line.

Returning line play is a key indicator in success at the college level....looks good for the Griz.

I understand and appreciate your perspective. And I LOVE playoff games. I am simply focusing on the positive of this past season. Like life, nobody wants the shi*ty times to linger for too long but because of them, the good times are that much better.

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer but my enthusiasm is tempered by epic coaching failures of 2012 and the poster play was the d-line falling backing on 4 and short that enabled a first down that probably cost the Griz the game. Defending on a punt is arguably the simplest football play there is -- all the defense has to do is guard against the fake and the returner has to signal fair catch and then catch the ball. That's it. Anything more is gravy.

Before I get too giddy about what might be I have to get over that play and many more like it where coaching failed like we have not seen it fail since, well as long as I can remember. I am actually far less concerned about the bodies on the field than the few standing on the sidelines. I have never felt this way about Griz football in all my years of being a fan.

I agree - I'm right there too, I meant to post this as a hopeful outlook but I'm right there with you, my biggest concerns in order are:

1. Coaching Staff
2. Starting QB
3. Safety play
4. WR play

I keep wanting to be real positive and think everything will be "fine" come next fall, but then I actually start thinking about it ... and it doesn't feel "fine" at all. I would add another concern to your list, BW, and that would be 'administrative support.'

I appreciate the hope and optimism for the 2013 Griz But, something else has changed.

"The ol' gray mare, she ain't what she used ta be." Neither is the BSC. Many schools that were only after-thoughts to the Griz are now key contenders for the BSC championship. Southern Utah beat a MWC team last season. NAU is resurgent. Yeah, the Cats whiff in the playoffs, but they were in the playoffs the past 2 years & the Griz weren't. EWU remains, well, EWU. Then, there's Cal Poly. Most of these teams were ranked last season.

Then, there's UNC. I know most of you scoff, but there's a strong football tradition at UNC & the Bears may just contend this year. The Griz can get to & win in the playoffs & get back on schedule, but the coaching, play-calling, player execution, and penalty-free must be pristine. The Griz can deliver this, but the ol' BSC ain't what it used ta be.

It's incredible the football talent in this country, from what I've seen in bowl games and the FCS NC game. The days of Griz dominance may be over. Absolutely nothing can be taken for granted, any more. I think/hope the Griz can regain that dominance, but it'll be a helluva task. Griz fans can no longer rest on Griz laurels. It's going to be one game at a time, regardless of opponent. Go Grrizzz! :thumb:

So that incredible friday night playoff game against N Iowa a little over a year ago never really happened??

I won't argue any of your points and many have merit. Having said that, something troubles me. Recruiting to the U of M should be piece of cake compared to the other schools in the BSC. Northern Colorado, Eastern, WSU, ISU, UND, and NAU - enough said. Cal Poly has weather, good academics, and a recruitment base that is very close - so they have something. Portland State has the urban attraction and should have a foothold in the northwest for recruiting (does not appear to have occurred thus far). MSU has upgraded their facilities, has a great President who has the academic and leadership thing down pat, and they have plenty of fat girls if you are into that kind of thing. My point being - other than academics and geography, the U of M should outsell/recruit easily. Better fan base and facilities than anyone in the BSC (FCS for that matter) and let's not forget the number of players that have gone on to the NFL from the program. Easy sell - so I am not overly concerned as long as we get a decent HC next year and RE gets the boot by the BOR. I am confident one of the two will happen.
