Hope CDA is okay - bad Maui fires

We've been to the Islands many times ... in the past. (Molokai mo' better!)

On one trip, we drove to the start of that north road on Maui, thinking we'd explore "off the beaten track." I'd guess we made maybe a mile after the "real" highway ended. I hate backing up, but I made an exception to find a spot wide enough to turn around. Back then, the road (if you could call it that) was so bad, I was actually afraid we were violating our rental car agreement. (Not the only time that happened over there, BTW. )

I can’t imagine the road is any better now unless they decided to move the mountains to widen it to its current ~8 feet. I’m sure the right side of my rental Jeep is completely fudge, but I’m not sure I care. I just spoke with a young couple whose house burned down in Lahaina. Their neighbor lost a couple pets. That poop breaks my heart.

Thanks everyone. We barely got out. No phones, no power, and they were running out of food because everything is closed. Dr. CDA made a great decision to try the north road when it was open for a brief period of time early this morning. (South road through Lahaina is going to be closed for some time I bet). They closed it again very soon after we got through. I don’t recommend ever taking the north road, FYI. One lane white knuckler for sure. We made it to Wailea where there is food and power.

Again, in a moment of rare seriousness, we thank you for your thoughts. It’s a bad situation on the west side of this island.

Heart breaking, we have a place on the Big Island fairly close to their wild fires, but not even close to what is happening on Maui. God Speed everyone.

25 years ago one of the managers at Mooses in Lahaina was a UM alum. We got a heads up and arrived carrying the latest Griz gear. I thought she was going to cry when she opened the bag. We had complimentary mai tais the rest of the trip.

Everyone, I wouldn’t bump this save for the fact I just saw on the local news here that the Maui Humane Society is asking for donations of any kind for all the pets that have been burned or abandoned. They just showed a young lab who had his paws burned down to the bones.
