Same story, different opponent.
Third-ranked Loyola Sacred Heart dominated throughout in its 41-13 Class B football quarterfinal win over previously unbeaten and top-ranked Manhattan on Saturday at Rollin Field.
The Rams (10-0) are set to host an 8-2 Baker team that downed Glasgow 16-13 in the semifinals.
Senior quarterback Bo Hughes carried the ball 16 times for 100 yards and four touchdowns, and completed six of 13 passes for 100 moreyards (99 coming in the first half), but it was the Loyola defense that shined brightest on a cloudy Missoula afternoon.
“Our defense played phenomenal,” Hughes said. “The defensive coach (Hughes’ father, Todd) had the schemes written up perfectly for us.
“Offensively, we were stopped a couple of times, but we came back fired up and got a stop of our own. When we do that, Manhattan is back on defense, knowing they can’t get anything on offense.”
The Rams’ defense came up with six interceptions, two fumble recoveries and five sacks, as well as holding strong to force a turnover on downs in the second quarter.
“I tell you what, our defense had an outstanding ballgame today,” Loyola head coach Dan Weber said. “Manhattan is a heck of a crew, and they do some things really well offensively. Our kids got the picks, got the turnovers. We had our kids really prepared for what they needed to watch for, and they did a great job executing.”
Down 27-13 with 4:30 to play, the Tigers (9-1) still had hope for two quick scores to save their season.
However, Manhattan turned the ball over on each of its final three drives as a Brady Vandyken fumble was sandwiched between two pick-sixes thrown by senior quarterback Quinn McQeary.
Rams junior defensive back Tony Madsen had two of McQueary’s picks, and he took his second 21 yards to the end zone, giving Loyola a seemingly insurmountable 34-13 lead.
Just over four minutes later, sophomore linebacker Marty Pigeon came down with a juggling pick at the Rams’ 45-yard line, which he returned 55 yards to pay dirt.
“Once you get that ball, you just want to go as fast as you can,” Pigeon said. “So I just let it loose and let it rip. I saw McQueary open up to my side, so I ran a flat. I then saw him go back deep, so I dropped deep. I saw the ball, jumped up, juggled it and ran. All I was thinking was, ‘I’m gone. Touchdown.’ ”
Although the Loyola offense scored four touchdowns, the team would have been fine without them as the defense’s two scores netted 14 points, which would have been enough to claim victory.
“Coach Hughes told me that, and I said, ‘Don’t even go there,’ ” Weber said. “When he starts putting up that many points with the defense, it makes it a lot easier for us working on the offensive side of the ball.”
Despite his six interceptions, McQueary completed 18 of 33 throws for 179 yards and a 15-yard touchdown pass to fellow senior Michael Daines. Daines finished with four catches for 40 yards.
Vandyken ran for 90 yards on 13 attemps and found the end zone on a 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter.
With a semifinal matchup with Baker on the horizon, Weber’s confidence shined nearly as bright as his team did Saturday.
“I don’t care who we play,” he said. “I like our chances against anybody.”
