So....the whole portal thing....umm... can we even land a portal player? If so...what are we paying? What caliber of player are we getting from the portal? I'm serious here....I have no idea. I know OSU won a National Championship because they spent a lot. What are we spending?

Yes, of course, UM can land someone from the Portal. UM has been doing that for multiple years. 14 from the Portal were announced in February. More have been disclosed since then.

Paying NIL to Portal players and transfers increases the chances of players selecting UM. However, not all players from the Portal, or other transfers, get NIL money from UM's NIL.

There's not much public information about how much money the UM NIL has or how much players are getting. Some of the NIL money is being used to keep top UM players at UM.

There are some larger amounts of UM NIL money being paid, and also many more pieces of smaller NIL money being paid.

I guess my question is this...I see Michigan and OSU are fighting over a "$800k" QB. What $$$ QB is Montana fighting for with other FCS teams? Are we giving a guy a $100k? $200k? $50k?

I'm seriously lost as to how the new world of college football works...especially as it pertains to the FCS and Montana. Do kids still go to college and play for scholarships??? Or do the best players get scholarships and $800k? Do they even need to enroll and go to class anymore?

Seems like college football is turning into epic dumb-assery.

Thanks...that helps a little...but still very vague.... basically "yes...and we don't really know."

Michigan and OSU have little or nothing in common with UM. Can't imagine that UM is paying 100K or 200K for any QB. Not sure if Ah Yat is getting anything over the minimum pieces. Assume Jensen came to UM to have a chance to finally get on the field, and not because of NIL money. Doubt that UM has paid anyone 200K, including Gubner and Bergen. I assume they got good chunks. I know Gubner did. I don't know any specific amounts.

Others who know some or more should speak up if they can.

I agree that college football and basketball have lost their ways, and that NIL and an open Portal have changed everything, mostly towards the worst. Personally, I don't care if players are able to get any big money. It is ruining the amateur game. Small amounts should have always been allowed. Buying your teams doesn't seem sporting to me. And constant transfers make the sport worse, not better.

I suppose there's some argument for big money schools sharing some money with players. But not at levels like FCS and lower FBS. Those schools don't make extra money. They can't even cover the costs of their sports now. Many who play college sports for the love of the game, are being hurt and will probably ultimately be diminished and extinguished, in order to divert big bucks to greedy big name players, who have no loyalty.

As I understood things, specific amount$ were intentionally NOT being made public in order to avoid exactly what you are seeing with the two FBS named schools above fighting over the QB player as mentioned above. That was my limited knowledge of the “Why.”

Doesn't this sound shaddy AF?
No. Teams at all levels are keeping their cards close to their vest. 1) UM doesn't want competitors knowing how much we have to spend, as that would give them a competitive advantage. 2) It can cause internal divisions within a team. 3) Publicizing money the kids get is just kind of gauche, in my opinion.

A lot of the NIL kids are getting are coming from actual sponsorships with folks like Lithia. One student was getting a new jeep to lease every year in exchange for advertising for Lithia (I think it was Lithia?). I'm not sure how the merchandise sales are going.

As for your first question about if we have been able to sign people, the Griz have actually done really well in the Portal in terms of signing significantly more people than we have lost. Some, like Riley Wilson, both came and left in the portal. Here is the list for this year --

At the end of the interview with Wortham, that was pretty impressive IMO, he was asked why he choose to come to Montana. The main thing he said was "To win" but he also mentioned, off hand, that the NIL was similar to other schools who had offered. I was surprised by that. I'm not sure what other schools bid on him, maybe some of you smart people can find that out, but it sounds to me that UM can compete there.

if you go back when they first signed him he did an interview and he say" I am doing this for my family" which if you read between the lines it means he was paid enough for him to come to Montana.

Looks to me that college sports now is nothing more than a pro circuit based on the amount of money you are able to negotiate. Bad situation for a 18-22 year old youngster.

Would the Washington’s perhaps sweeten the pot with a healthy, quiet NIL donation? Or is that just wishful thinking?

Edit: deleted because I was in the wrong thread. Out of practice!

Yes, I'm sure the Washington's have been contacted frequently.

Forgot DJ Peevy in the list

At times, I think college sports should be cut away from universities. The marriage (college sports and universities) is full of tradition and memories. It is just hard for me to accommodate the realities of NIL, coaches salaries, salaries of instructors and college presidents, mission of universities, and how they all come together.
