The former Montana State University football player who, alongside his brother, was arrested last week on federal charges of drug trafficking will not appear for a scheduled detention hearing Tuesday morning.

A federal judge in Missoula vacated the hearings for Richard Demond Gatewood, 23, and Randy Lamar Gatewood, 21, after their attorneys filed motions requesting additional time to develop a plan for their release.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah Lynch granted the motions on Monday after prosecutors with the U.S. attorney’s office did not voice any opposition.

The detention hearings have not yet been rescheduled.

Both Richard Gatewood, a former wide receiver for the Bobcats, and his brother remain in custody at the Missoula County jail on a federal hold.

An 18-page affidavit of probable cause alleges that the elder Gatewood used his athletic scholarship money to facilitate a drug-dealing cartel in Bozeman, trafficking large amounts of cocaine into Montana from California over a two-year period. The affidavit accuses the younger sibling of assisting his brother by delivering cocaine and collecting money.
