Hauck on Davis

"I thought our quarterbacks struggled a little bit seeing coverage," Hauck said. "I think they had a couple new things for us and certainly a different blend of coverages. I didn't think we saw coverage very well, would be my initial impression.”

Lacking on the line

Montana ran the ball a season-low 27 times for 77 yards, its second-fewest rushing yards this season. The only time the Griz ran for fewer yards was when they totaled 68 yards on 32 carries in the previous week at Cal Poly.

"They controlled the line for scrimmage," Hauck said of the Aggies. "We weren't getting any knock-back on them. They were really successful in terms of shedding blocks and getting to the ball carrier.

"They gave us a couple of difficult looks and we didn't handle them very well. I think we missed some targeting on a couple of things after they moved fronts and we motioned. It's more about them doing a nice job controlling the line of scrimmage and getting off their blocks.”

Still, Montana finished with a season-low 286 total yards of offense. Its previous low, 320 yards, came back in a Week 2 loss at North Dakota. UM played without starting left tackle Cannon Panfiloff as Dillon Botner filled in.

"In any offense, if you can't run it and you're one-dimensional, it becomes more difficult," Hauck said. "We did not run it well. Again, I think that their front group did a great job. They controlled the line of scrimmage."

"Defensively we did a great job mixing in our zone coverage and max coverages," Plough said. "We did a great job getting pressure on the quarterback tonight, which we really hadn't done all season. Some four-man rushes that got home with Jackson Cloyd and a couple guys getting some sacks.

"I just thought we were able to get some consistent pressure on the quarterback. Then I thought we did a great job mixing up the back end. Then when we a got the chance to make a play, we did, which was big.”

"We couldn't generate first downs at that point in the game," Hauck said. "We kept having to go back out there and stop them. I thought our defense actually played pretty dang well tonight. We couldn't get it down the field and get into the end zone.”

They did not allow any plays of 30-plus yards to Davis, an area where they have cleaned up while playing more zone defense instead of man. They did allow nine passes of 15 or more yards and two runs of 10 or more yards.
That included losing Ian Simpson in coverage on a 22-yard TD pass that put UM down 20-14 and proved to be the winning score. That was the second-longest play by Davis, while the longest was a double pass of 29 yards by receiver C.J. Hutton to Simpson to set up a TD that put the Griz down 27-14.

"They hit us on a couple things, they snuck a couple guys out and it was in man coverage," Hauck said. "We played a lot of zone early. Tim (Plough) does a good job with that stuff. They really do a good job of getting you going one direction and then getting back to the other side. They got us a couple times.”

"We had a couple guys get loose in man coverage that cost us a couple of big plays in our end of the field, which was really the difference in the game," Hauck said. "I think Lan's a terrific player, but he wasn't the difference in the game."

No mention of the weather? In my view, that was a huge factor in this game.

On their opening drive, Dave clearly struggled with the conditions and were not acclimated yet. From that point, they just seemed to be warmer and played better.

lol... that's funny, yet might be somewhat alarming that Hauck actually mentioned the weather during his PSU presser, said something about how it's supposed to get cold.

It wasn't that cold... almost balmy!

Warm weather teams don't like cold and nasty weather. That doesn't mean that they don't overcome that or do well in it. It's just one more factor. Davis clearly didn't like the crowd noise earlier in the game. Four false start penalties by half way through the second Q, is my recollection.

And 2 delay of game penalties in addition to the four false start penalties.

So on a neutral field they would have beat you by around 30 ish... is my guess. Of course it's tough to exactly quantify how many points it's worth getting to play teams in Wg Stadium, but most people believe it's worth at least ten to twelve points.

I think Hauck's assessment is good. EGriz will wear its emotions down to a nub on QB play. Thea reality is that Davis not only controlled the line of scrimmage, but did so with one 375 lb defensive tackle taking up two Griz offensive linemen all night.
The coaches must have seen Prince Toki on on video and known that their blocking schemes were going to be disrupted from the first possession to the last. You can hope that the fat beast will tire out and you'll be able to get back to your regular blocking schemes, but #75 was a force the Griz O line had to deal with, to the point of not running a lot of what it normally does and also having one less lineman free to deal with the Davis pass rush.
I don't think throwing your way out of the situtation was the best approach. What probably would have worked was a veer option game that forced the the defensive line, including chubby magoo, to move north south after the QB, pitch, and dive. Take the secondary out of it and make the D Line and linebackers run ragged.
