Guffey to Retire as SID on June 30

Has been at UM 37 years.

"Guffey has watched 439 of Montana’s last 442 football games, from the days the Grizzlies struggled to outdraw the men’s basketball team at Dornblaser Stadium to the I-AA/FCS dynasty that emerged with the on-campus construction of Washington-Grizzly Stadium."

"He hasn’t missed a Griz football game since the third year of the Don Read era."

“I’ve seen all 52 playoff games and seven national championships,” he said. “I’d say I’ve been pretty lucky. Not too many SIDs can claim that.”

I spoke with him a few times and was surprised he didn't show much interest in any sport that wasn't "mainstream" at the U. Might have been his job to only promote scholarship sports, but U of M has plenty of successful non scholarship athletes that don't get any recognition.

Good guy. We all recognize the contributions to UM that coaches make, but often there is not sufficient notice of the contributions that other athletic dept people make. I have heard Countless ex-players that comment on the "good guys" like Hack, Stack, Guff, Murph, or Naseby. Those are just a few names.

In my experience, Guffey was not a fan's SID; he treated fans poorly and talked down. He never seemed obligated to those that pay the bills. Thanks to Guffey's long service, but looking forward to new blood.

I've always enjoyed Guff and have a good relationship with him.

But I agree with Kem that a change is likely overdue. It's a different media world than it was 30 years ago.

Thank god. This should have happened a long time ago. He may have been a great guy, but he also dropped the ball pretty consistently. Who remembers the days when the information on online rosters wouldn't be updated for months at a time? This wasn't that long ago. Grizzly Athletics' online presence is just now catching up to where it should be.

While I agree with you about the stale information on the athletics website, you have to remember that's only been the last 15 or 17 that fans were trying to track down information online. Old SID's are used to dishing out info the local newspapers, radio and television, most of which aren't obsessively looking for updated roster information in months when football really isn't being reported on.
I'll bet the Missoulian could care less if the Griz football roster is up to date in May or even July.

Wow. What was the fallout of not having a current roster at your fingertips?

Who's responsibility was it to get out updated rosters?

The gogriz site doesn't do a very good job. It also doesn't get game stats out very quickly. The new site isn't set up very well either. Not very user friendly in the day and age of the internet.

I've always liked Guffey.

Guff doesn't run gogriz.com. Does he help? Yes. Is he responsible for submitting content? Yes. But he isn't in charge of the site and doesn't do the posting. As far as MEDIA is concerned, Guff has done an outstanding job for years! And ALL the head coaches in the department, not just football and basketball will tell you that. Ask Chris Nord what he thinks of Dave Guffey and that's tennis. Guff did NOT only care about football and basketball. He genuinely cares about Grizzly athletics from top to bottom.

I've worked closely with Guff for a long time now, and he's ALWAYS been on top of anything I needed. If I email Guff, I get a response no later than a half hour, even if he's out of the office.

While many armchair SID's will have their opinions, I can guarantee Guff's hard work and dedication to his job will be sorely missed inside the athletic offices and by a lot of members of the media.

You're not a bad poster, but why be a dumbasss when you obviously don't know what you're talking about. Hav is running circles around you, and lapping you, on this subject.

Who cares less what the Missoulian thinks; who gets their UM information from there?

This! The last place I would go is the Missoulian. I would expect more unbiased reporting on the U of M from the Bozo Chronicle actually. Wether you like Guffey or not - congrats to him on such a long tenure. 30 years at any job is to damn long in my opinion. Burn out is inevitable.

I found him to be patient and willing to "teach" a cub reporter when I was with the Kaimin back in the late 80s. Good luck to him in retirement. I wish my resume was sexy enough to apply for the job.
