'Grizzly Bill' Schwanke Retires From Play-by-Play

Well-known member
My friend for nearly 40 years, 'Grizzly Bill' Schwanke has officially hung up his head-set and retired from doing play-by-play. As the "Voice of the Griz' for 21 years, Bill was named Sportscaster of the Year six times, and has earned a spot in the memories of every Griz fan.

Personally, I've never worked with a finer broadcaster or a better friend.

Please take a moment to watch the interview..and then share a memory or two about 'Grizzly Bill'

Thanks! pc

I've always liked Grizzly Bill and I think it was shameful the way he was edged out of the then Grizzly Athletic Association and subsequently a more prominent spot as a radio announcer for Griz sports.

Bill is one of those few men who is just as passionate about the rest of the university as he is athletics. He knows athletics is the front door through which most of us pass to access the university, but that it's meaningless if the rest of the house isn't on solid ground. I have always thought Bill, like Kermit, would do whatever was best for the university, even if it meant speaking the truth at the risk of offending some.

Best of fortunes GB. You were an exceptional broadcaster and writer in your day and Griz Nation and all associated with the University of Montana greatly appreciate all you did for fans of Grizzly athletics and the memories you provided with your stellar service. A true Griz Great! :thumb:

VERY VERY HARD To Replace...

He is as big of a part of Grizdom as Dickenson, Krysko and Papa Bear.

UM had better put a new section up somewhere at UM to celebrate his awesome abilities.
I spent 10 times more hours listening to his calls as actually in a UM stadium.

He is the voice that became Griz sports.

I have known Bill forever and as you all have mentioned he is/was a great broadcaster for us Griz fans. I spent some time with him years ago during some of our away games, neat guy!
I think we will continue to see him at most of our sporting events. He also was a part time sports writer for the Missoulian.

a good man, and Griz, will be missed !

“Any win over the Bobcats is memorable,” he laughed. “Beating them badly was even more memorable.

I've known Bill for over 35 years. A great guy, terrific common sense and judgment, a fountain of knowledge, outstanding parent, and just all-around the kind of guy you are glad elevated sports at the University of Montana.

I had completely forgotten about the popcan incident at Bozoid and then seeing the popcan costume at the Zoo! Watching Zanon keep his composure and sink the free throws was amazing. Bill was the fixture for all things Griz and its going to be impossible to replace him.

Grizzly Bill says it all! I've known the man since Craig Hall days in the fall of 63. He transcends the ages of sports history in Montana. His passion and loyalty to the U of M is legendary and he called a damn good game on the radio. Grizzly Bill for something emaritus at the U of M!!!!!! You da man Bill!!!!!
