Griz-Zags game on right now

Went to the game with "grizfnz" at the new Gonzaga stadium. Nice stadium but alot smaller than expected with all the money they put into it. Turiaf is a punk and missed a couple of dunks much to our liking.
Anyone hear why Criswell didn't play a lick??

Criswell was injured. Sounds like Lamarr Farr, Virgil Matthews & Matt Martin played really well. Of course Kamarr Davis did (Got a double double, 15 points and I think 11 rebounds). Farr had 9 points and I think 4 assists & played very good defense while he was in. Virgil Matthews had 10 points as did Matt Martin. The final stats are up yet on espn.com so I'm not sure how many assists/steals or rebounds Farr, Matthews or Martin had.

So far it looks like we are a little thin in the post. Davis played great, but is going to draw a lot of double teams until our other post players step up and become somewhat of a scoring threat. Seyfert fouled out with 3 points & Easley had 2 points & 4 fouls. Andrew Strait didn't play much since he left the game after getting hit in the eye. I hope he can step up and become the other scoring post player we really need this season.
 
Realizing this was just the first game (against a top 25 team), aside from Davis I am still worried about our lack of productivity at the post. The strength of this team may very well be at the 2 and 3 positions. Criswell, Farr, Dlouhy and Matthews are all good to super good athletes who can score pass, and rebound. I wonder if the coaches won't look at going with a smaller lineup to more fully utilize this strength. This approach made a big difference last year when Booker began starting at the 3 position and we basically went with a 3 guard line-up.
 
A tough game, Gonzaga just had too many horses. Griz shot poorly, but attribute that to the Zags defense. Spotted them a 8-0 lead, missed a lot of bunnies early on. Kevin's ankle (non-surgery) was tender. He's been practicing, but he wasn't in good enough condition to make a contribution.

Lots of positives out of this game though...

-We actually played defense, I think this is the best I've seen a Griz team D-up over the last couple of years
-Interesting to see that when the coach isn't always yelling at the refs our foul count stays below 30.
-Martin can shoot under some adversity. This will really open up the offense.
-Farr and Matthews played solid. Easley looked good minus some 3's that he shouldn't have taken.
-Seyfert kept Turiaf in check, but racked up the fouls as a result.

Overall, the team is in a good place. They showed flashes of being able to run with a solid team, but have a long way to go.
 
Matt Martin could be good. A very solid point who can shoot. If Seyfert and Easley play well that will help Davis out tremendously. It seems like the 5 spot will end up being and offense/defense sub. Easley scores and has nice touch but he flops on contact too much in the lane. I think the Griz have a good chance to be solid this year. Farr is a nice looking athlete. That always helps.

On a second note, I was very un-impressed with the new arena there. How much did they spend? I know the Martin Center was kind of like Whitefish's gym but many millions for the new one doesn't look much better (on TV at least).
 
I wouldn't call Turiaf a punk.(None of your football players are punks, are they) He's a pretty good player. He did get fouled on a few dunk attempts. Y'all wouldn't like to see your players get hacked on a way to a jam.
If ya don't like the new arena then don't come back. Garco Contruction did a great job. What more nicities did you expect.
 
The new arena is MUCH MUCH better than the old one. It seems open and has a nice touch to it. The arena cost $25 million. There is a open walkway above the lower section on the baselines that runs underneath the upper seating on the sidelines. Huge windows on both sides of these walkways with 20'+ posters of former Zag players. Pretty cool actually. There were even windows on one of the baseline walls, which can be seen from the court and most seats. I was impressed on how they got a "commercial" look but maintained a good home feel.
 
All the Les Schwab tire stuff on the floor and the basket supports isn't something I would expect from a school like GU. I thought it looked really tacky having Les Schwab tire logos right in the middle of a beautiful basketball court. Overall we got screwed by the refs but they were obviously the better team and you have to expect that going into play the DUKE of the mid majors. Plus the guys doing the broadcast made me sick. From the terrible "P-MAC" nickname to calling every past and present Zag the "best in the country" at something. Zags look good again this year and I wish them the best of luck.

I don't mind the Les Schwab sign on the Zags new floor. The naming rights for the floor was listed as 5 million. How much Les Schwab donated is your guess? Since every Zag game is on TV, it is money well spent for the company. Just think of Les Schwab as the Zag version of Cliff Edwards without Edwards name on the turf at WA-GRIZ.
 
Turiaf scored 40 vs Vandals tonight and looked quite impressive. Didn't wine about every non-call like he did vs the Griz. Zags guards are very quick and have some serious skills. They are going to be tough again this year.
