Special Teams Shine as Grizzlies Control Field Position in Win Over Weber State

In a game dominated early by Montana’s offense and defense, it was the Grizzlies’ special teams that quietly ensured there would be no momentum swing for Weber State. Behind a strong day from punter and kicker Ty Morrison, the No. 3 Griz used steady, field-flipping special teams play to secure a 38–17 win and their first victory in Ogden since 2012.

Morrison was a difference-maker all afternoon. He averaged 48.8 yards on five punts, including a booming 65-yarder in the fourth quarter that flipped the field and helped Montana’s defense slam the door on any hopes of a Weber State comeback. Two of his punts pinned the Wildcats inside their own 20-yard line, and another set up a turnover on downs after forcing a long field.

Morrison also handled the Grizzlies’ kicking duties, connecting on a 33-yard field goal just before halftime to stretch Montana’s lead to 31–10. The make came after an earlier miss, a quick redemption that underscored Montana’s command of the game’s small but vital moments.

Kick coverage units were solid throughout the contest, with Weber State unable to break any returns past midfield. The lone blemish came midway through the third quarter, when a punt return set the Wildcats up at the Montana 43-yard line — a short field that Weber State converted into its lone touchdown drive after halftime. Otherwise, the Grizzlies’ coverage was tight and disciplined, forcing the Wildcats to repeatedly start deep in their own territory.

Montana’s return game didn’t have to do much with the offense rolling early, but the unit stayed secure with no muffed punts or costly penalties, maintaining the clean execution that has defined this phase all season.

In a game where Montana outgained Weber State by nearly 150 yards and controlled the tempo from start to finish, the special teams edge provided the final polish. Morrison’s punting and kicking helped the Griz dominate the hidden-yardage battle, turning long fields for Weber State into short, efficient scoring opportunities for Montana.

With the win, the Grizzlies moved to 9–0 overall and 5–0 in Big Sky play, continuing their push toward a conference title and top playoff seeding. As the games get tighter in November, Montana’s balanced attack — offense, defense, and special teams — looks more complete each week.
