Griz vs Minn

Why isn't Kemp playing and contributing more? I thought he looked terrific in the early scrimmage and game I attended. I'm not complaining or criticizing; I'm just asking those who may be in the know.

PR : the Griz were badly outrebounded and Tinks went to small lineup.

“We learned we have a long way to go,” eighth-year Montana coach Wayne Tinkle said in a postgame interview on KGVO radio. “It was the first game out and we had some guys who for whatever reason weren’t quite ready to go, so I have to take that on me. We didn’t get much from our bigs, so we had to go small. We had to search for a lineup that would compete.”
“They crushed us on the glass, but we went small because we weren’t getting anything out of our bigs,” Tinkle said. “We’re going to get our bigs better. We’re going to get them a little more sure of how we’re going to involve them.”

Hutch can't catch a pass!!! 5th year senior and you'd think he'd have developed that talent. If and when he does the rim and backboard both cringe at the thought of what's about to clang into them.

I didn't think rebounding was that bad, despite what the 45-29 rebound vanity metrics show. If there is a problem there, it's not due to the player's approach, fundamentals or willingness to rebound, it's more of a product of our style of play. Our bigs of Hutch, Martin and Kemp combined to play 24 minutes, so there wasn't much rebounding to be had out of them. I saw all three guys do a nice job boxing out on defensive end, with guards coming in and cleaning up. If your game plan is to not get out and run, this works fine and well.

We held Minnesota to getting offensive boards 37% of missed shots; that's pretty good, considering the opponent.

What really stings is lack of offensive rebounding. We got an offensive board only 14% of missed shots, which currently places us 320th nationally in offensive rebounding percentage. This is a product of our offensive style and our small lineups too. I saw a ton of 4 out looks last night, with big man coming out setting a high pick and then instead of rolling hard to basket, soft popping to the elbow (also awful job of our guards using on-ball picks). Guards would then either throw up a skiddish shot or kick for a three. The result is no guys in good position to get an offensive board, with just about everyone out on the perimeter.

In summary, offensive rebounding is a problem due to our style of play. Defensive rebounding is not a problem. This has been the trend the past couple years, with the way Tinkle likes to play, our lack of post offense, and our surplus of guards and three point shooters.

Kemp had 3 rebounds in 7 minutes, as well as a steal, 2 missed shots and 2 fouls. He must have rebounded okay. Don't know when he played in the game. I've thought he would be a big contributor this year, based on what I saw earlier in the season and practice.

I'm confident he will be. JC players usually start to show what they are truly capable of close to conference time. Even the great AJ didn't wow until about the 5th game of the season. He was starting by the 10th.

AJ's first game for the Griz @Colorado State he was 1-6 shooting, 3 points, 1 assist and 1 rebound in 13 minutes.

Kemp right now seems almost nervous out there offensively. I'm not sure defensively how he's doing but I'm guessing he's not quite there yet either or Tinkle would be playing him more already. By conference time I bet he'll be getting a ton of minutes and possibly starting.

hey, are we living in a bubble? are we such griz fans that we're fooling ourselves? let me make a few points:
--i didn't think we'd beat minnesota but i thought we'd show much better than we did. this was a thumping, both halves, from first minute to last. after gregory's three, we were never in it.
--player rep had described kemp as a "monster," and while i agree that it takes time for jaycee talent to adjust (a la a.j.), so far he's been a monster bust.
-- in his otherwise excellent post, word suggested the rebounding margin wasn't as bad as it looked. huh? we got out-rebounded by 16! our starting center got zero rebounds. our three key bigs--kemp, martin, hutch--garnered a whopping total of four. and minnesota was playing without their starting suspended center.
--our three bigs played a combined total of 24 minutes. what's up with that? there are sixth-men who play more minutes than that all by themselves.
--mike weisner is not a "big." we can call him a big, but he weighs 193 pounds. that's a happy meal for a true big man.
--during the off-season, we'd heard, presumably through the coaching staff, that hutch had worked on his game to great effect, while martin had bulked up. so where are these weapons of mass destruction now?

i take some consolation from this game.
--the freshmen looked good, and lopez might be a surprise. i've liked dunn since i saw him play in high school. his mcdonald's all-america teammate jabari bird, now at cal, did everything he could to get montgomery to sign him too. unlike will cherry, who was just a raw one-man defensive wrecking crew in high school with no well-defined position, dunn is a true point guard, with polished skills and uber-quickness. looks like we got a good one, at a key position. and gfeller can shoot, no question.
--when all is said and done, we return to a lousy conference where we'll look like a pig in ribbons. until then, this could get ugly.

What does it say that if he was any better he wouldn't of even of been here in the first place? That he would have been playing for someone else.

If Gonzaga is the program we most want to emulate, we will have to not only compete in, but win these types of games.

Until then, we'll just have to: (1) hope to stay healthy by the time conference games begin, (2) hope to beat Weber State for the conference title, and (3) get ready to play somebody way better than Minnesota in the NCAA tourney.

City - I wouldn't say Kemp has been a monster bust. It's actually gone a bit as expected for a JC player... AJ sure wasn't a bust when he was 1-6 shooting in the blowout loss to Colorado State his first game here.

It's VERY rare for a JC player to step right in and kick ass from the first game.

I do agree our bigs got abused this game and didn't show a lot to make us confident in their abilities. It was a lot like last year honestly.

Remember last year's game against Colorado State? Sure it was a LOT closer (mainly due to them shooting like shit and us shooting fairly well), but they outrebounded us 40-17. Our true post players (including Ward) had a combined total of 3 rebounds all game. Hutch had 1 in 18 minutes, Martin had 1 in 5 minutes and Wiley had 1 in 2 minutes. Ward had 0 in 20 minutes.

I still stand by what I said earlier... I wonder if we'd be better off just throwing Kemp into the fire these early games and giving him quality minutes to hopefully speed up the JC to D1 basketball transition since we seem to be still getting very little production from the 5.

I don't think that the "JC players often need time to adjust." I think that is just how Tinkle likes working them into the flow of the team. I would think though, that the more playing time you get, the quicker you'll get into "the flow." Sure, when AJ was here, he didn't really take off until his 5th / 6th game, but (if I'm remembering correctly [and I could be wrong]), AJ didn't get more than 5/10 minutes per game until those 5th / 6th games. Same thing with Coleman happened his first year here. Hard to make an impact with new team-mates when you only play around 5 - 7 minutes per game because the coach is "working you in."

While the Griz took a pretty good beating I wouldn't get too worked up about it and we shouldn't come to any grand conclusions about this team. With a few adjustments on both sides of the ball and some guys stepping up the way I believe they are capable, this team may look a lot better in just a week or two...or even tomorrow night!

Agreed! No time to panic. We've opened seasons before with complete smackdowns and things turned out just fine. The conference season is what really matters. If we take a few lumps getting ready for it by trying to figure out what works best then so be it, as long as we are ready by conference!

Oh how we could use Breunig right now!

True. Could have probably used Wiley too. I had hopes that he was going to be a big contributor this year.

I never described Kemp as "monster". He has looked very good in the 3 situations I saw him play. He scored at will on Hutchinson in the scrimmage. He rebounded very well. He dunked well. 3 rebounds in 7 minutes is good rebounding. Can't rebound from the bench.
