Griz vs Badgers

i could be wrong about this, but i believe the last time a team from montana met a team from wisconsin, the team from montana won, and won at wisconsin, and it was an ncaa tournament game as well. we may have precedent on our side!

Griz will likely head to Albuquerque early enough to adjust to the elevation. Usually need a couple of days to adjust. I do not think it will be an issue for the Griz.

well, if they only play man to man, we know Will Cherry can get by any guard they have on the floor...the question is, when they help out, will the person he finds hit the open shot? If they shoot well, going to be a good game.

Oh man, this one is personal for me, both of my parents grew up in Wisconsin, my dad has a degree from there as well. When my folks finally settled in Missoula in the early 70's both sides of their family stayed in Madison (and most all are still there). Our family (in Missoula) is Montana first, and Wisconsin second. This will be quite the week for me.

Ditto although my family is from the UP next door, brother and SIL live near Madison and my kid was offered a full ride to UW but went Blu instead. Wisconsin , like Montana is loaded with great people.

Badger fan here, congrats on a successful season, Griz fans.

I know next to nothing about your team, other than your mascot. So I'm looking forward to learning more this week.

As for the Badgers, we are a three point shooting team, plain and simple. Here's my breakdown of our contributing players:

Starters:

PG -- Jordan Taylor (Sr): Not the quickest guard in the world, but fast enough to get around guys if need be. He may be the strongest guard in the nation, however. He can post up, and has a few pretty nice moves. His three point shooting can be streaky, but there's nobody I'd rather have with the ball in his hands at the end of a game. Very clutch. He's been awesome for our program, on and off the court.

SG -- Josh Gasser (So): A pretty good shooter, and he can drive, but most Badger fans wish he would be more assertive on offense. He can sometimes disappear on that end of the court. On defense, he's well above average. By far the best guard defender we've got. And he may be the best rebounding guard Bo Ryan has ever had. His positioning on the blocks crashing the boards is second to none.

SF -- Ryan Evans (Jr): Borderline unusable when he came to Wisconsin, but he has improved immensely. He's mastered the art of the mid-range jumper this year. It doesn't always look pretty when he line drives one at the basket, but they've been going in more often than not. He's very athletic, but a little clumsy looking when he dribbles. He's another great rebounder, as well.

PF -- Mike Bruesewitz (Jr): He's played a lot since he came to Wisconsin as a freshman, but his offensive game hasn't made much progression. He's in a woeful shooting slump right now and has offered next to nothing on that side of the court for most of the year. What he does well, however, is the "glue" type of stuff. He's a gritty rebounder, and a pretty solid defender.

C -- Jared Berggren (Jr): He can be a load inside, although he needs to play through contact and finish at a higher percentage than he has recently. He seems to look for the foul when he goes up down low instead of finishing strong and letting the whistles blow where they may. He's got a pretty nice stroke from three for a big man, and is especially lethal from the top of the key. He can also put the ball on the floor and beat most other guys his size, but can be susceptible to guards with quick hands, as he tends to put the ball down low more often than I'd like.

Reserves:

SG -- Rob Wilson (Sr): Kid's made a lot of stupid mistakes in his years at Madison (on the court--off the court he's one of the nicest, best kids you'll ever meet), which has kept him off the floor for the most part. But things have started to click over the last month or so for Rob, culminating in his 30 point explosion last week vs. Indiana. He's started hitting the three with regularity, and is one of the best slashing players Wisconsin has. He's pretty explosive when he wants to be. He could be one of the biggest factors in Wisconsin's NCAA Tournament this year. If he's giving us 8-12 points, we could be tough to beat.

SG -- Ben Brust (So): I think he's going to be a good player for us down the road, but he's really struggled in recent weeks. Enormously streaky shooter. His threes either hit the bottom of the net, or clank off the backboard. He's tied Wisconsin's single game record for threes TWICE this season (7), but he's also gone on long stretches where he can't hit the broad side of a barn. He has a scorer's mentality, although even that has been tempered the last month or so, as I think his confidence has fallen off with his struggles. He can drive and hit the little floater as well. I really don't see him being a huge factor in this tournament, however.

PF/C -- Frank Kaminsky (Fr): Sweet stroke from deep, but lacks confidence to shoot unless he's WIDE OPEN (as many freshman do). Wish he'd be more assertive on the block--I can't remember the last time I've seen him make an aggressive post move. He can stretch the defense, and is a capable rebounder, but he can be beaten in the low block on defense. He'll be a very good player for Wisconsin in the future. As far as this tournament goes, he's probably good for a 3-6 points a game and not a whole lot more.

I've watched 5 Badger games this year, their poster in this thread is dead on when he says they are THE slowest offense in the nation. They're almost boring to watch however their defense is incredible. I watched their D totally frustrate and shut down OSU's Sullinger in the regular season. If Wisconsin gets going from the perimiter and grinds the game out they'll win it b/c that's exactly what they try to do. The Griz hold an advantage on guard play I'd say but defensively and with desired tempo, Wisconsin is better (in terms of doing what must be done to get a W).

We make a living on defense this year, for sure. I don't know much about your guards. Who will be guarding Jordan Taylor? Josh Gasser, our SG, will most likely take your best guard on defense for us.

Doug Gotlieb is the man! Picked us to upset Wisconsin!

We hate Gottlieb in Wisconsin. Last ESPN "Power Rankings" I saw (about 2 weeks ago), he didn't even have us ranked. Every other analyst had us in the top 16. :x

He sounds like a disgruntled fan of a team that got beat by Wisconsin at some point.

A lot of national analysts "hate" us because our style of play is so different. Many call it boring. I, for one, enjoy watching winning basketball. We don't turn the ball over, play great defense, generally have one of the most efficient offenses in the nation, and we win. As a Wisconsin fan, I love it.

I too know little about Wisconsin, but I like Albuquerque for two reasons (1) not terribly difficult to get to,
and (2) I think the crowd will be overwhelmingly for the Griz.

I'd be surprised. Wisconsin travels probably better than any D-1 fanbase in the nation, at least in football they do. Not to mention, Arizona and the Southwest is filled with transplants from the upper Midwest.

I guess if the non-partial fans root for the underdog, then it might be even, though.
