Griz starting line-up

Since practice starts Saturday I thought I should get in my totally baseless and most likely wrong prediction for this years starting line-up.

PG - Lynch, with lots of rotation with Martin, and some with Criswell
SG - Criswell, with Farr when Criswell runs the point
SF - Dloughy, with lots of minutes for Farr (depending on the lineup)
PF - Davis
C - Seyfert, with Chavez getting minutes if he makes it back.

The freshman forwards (Hasquet, Strait) should consider a redshirt or getting a seat cushion. Lots of opportunity for the younger guards to show they can run the offense and get playing time, someone needs to step up here.

Any other thoughts?

I could agree with you on all but the first. Martin is very good, and I predict he will start at guard.

Davis (1st Team All Big Sky) and Criswell for sure at power forward and 2 guard. Based on what Krysko said in the Missoulian, Seyfert at Center. After that it gets tricky, especially since practices haven't started yet. I think Matthews will get a strong look at the point. Farr will either start at small forward or get a ton of minutes both there and a the 2 guard. I would love to see the 3 true freshmen redshirt. Given our lack of scoring last year up front (except for Davis) we might see Strait play as a true freshman. He is a heckuva talent. So is Martin. However, Krysko gave Lynch a scholarship so he must be counting on a contribution from him at the point. Also, I think Farr will suprise a lot of people with his athletic ability and ball handling ability. He may very well play some point. He did at his JC school and was the guy they used to bring the ball up against pressure. Dlouhy could also start at the 2 or 3. He's another guy with great athletic skills. The wild card may be Wilkins if he is healthy.

If they were to play tonight I think this would be the lineup.

PG - Matthews
SG - Criswell
SF - Farr
PF - Davis
C - Seyfert

Virgil Matthews is a great "team" player. He will start at PG because of his work ethic, team attitude and experience at JC. He is one of the few guys on this squad who puts the team above himself.

Lamar Farr is EXPLOSIVE. Not only that but he's strong. I can't see Krysko passing up the chance to put his strongest front line possible on the court.

Dlouhy will get time, but not as much as most people think. He's still too worried about stats instead of wins. But the kid has really improved his offensive game this offseason. Unfortunately, his defense may be worse than it was last year. He won't play a lot until he can actually guard somebody.

Martin should get playing time, but I see him more at the 2 then at the point. Lynch has been working hard and improving and he'll get most the backup time at PG. Besides, shooting is what Martin does (and does a lot ).

I think Hasquet should get decent playing time too. He was easily the best player out of the state last year and he looks like he's willing to do whatever the coaches need, whether it be on the perimeter or down low. Plus, he's a hometown kid and playing time for him = ticket sales.

As for Strait, I've been hearing a lot of comparisons to Easley. Tall, lanky kid who doesn't quite fit at a position yet. Easley will play backup to Davis or Seyfert when one of them needs a break, but I can't see him playing a big role yet (all he wants to do is block shots and shoot 3's). Strait could end up redshirting.

McKay and Wilkins. I hope both of them are able to recover from the injury bug, but its so tough. I'm under the impression the coaches are not expecting much, but whatever contribution they get will be a bonus.

It looks like 4 Montana kids will be getting good amounts of playing time. That's something to be excited about right there.

MTGymRat- It sounds like you have been watching these guys play. Any other observations? Are Wilkins and Mckay still hurt? I noticed that Chavez was at the first practice (on local sports). That is very encouraging.

The team is going to run the triangle offense. That shouldn't be a suprise though, as Krysko ran it while coaching the Idaho Stampede. Plus he played under the master of the triangle (no not Phil, Tex Winter, Jackson's assistant in Chicago and LA both). The triangle is effective because its unpredictable. There are plays out of the triangle, but for the most part its a read-and-react kind of set up. However, this makes it very complicated for teams to execute, so we'll see how the Griz take to it.

I think Wilkins has been playing, but he's sat out for two years now. It's going to take time to get his bearings back. McKay was out earlier in the school year, but I'm not sure of his status right now. As for Chavez, he's been very active with Griz activities, but I don't think its worth getting any hopes up. He's not even listed on the roster. I'll believe that Mike is for real when he's suited up and in an actual game.
