Griz QB Justin Roper

He joined the basketball team.

Likely won't play, but that may be dictated by injuries.

mostly help out on practice.

Just like Beaudin 2 years ago, a football player comes to lend a hand to the basketball team in practices. Beaudin did play a little though.

He will, of course, be back with the football team next season.

I wonder how good he is. Too bad he is not a 4, we really are lacking depth there. My guess is Roper would be a 3/SF. Why not have Beaudin back or Dyk? I thought Dyk was a pretty solid baller, or was that another lineman?

Per Tinkle on KECI, Roper played for a very good AAU team and was all-state. Still, being brand new to the team in mid-season will probably mean little playing time.

I think either this information is inaccurate, Tinkle is off, or GA HS basketball sucks. Here is what I found so far.

The four-sport letterman also served as a guard on the school’s basketball team (averaging 7.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.2 steals), where he played against Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden ... Finished third in the state high jump as a junior (school-record 6-6), and was clocked in 1:04 in the 100-meter breaststroke on the school’s swim team.

Roper an all state (georgia) qb, that plays for a perennial state champ football team and a bball team that made the state semi's...not bad.

I liked this comment from the article:

Roper who appears to me to be more at ease on the basketball court verses the football field (even though he was an all-state quarterback) continued his impressive showing with a high flying follow-up and a short jumper to pulled Buford to with in 4 points 45-41 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

This is odd, Beaudin was brought in as a result of injuries to the bigs, what's the reason for bringing in Roper? Someone playing hurt?

Just a quick question or two: At the beginning of the year, I thought I heard Tinkle mentioning waiting for Hutchison to get back. Did I hear this wrong? Or is Hutchison on Redshirt or will apply for redshirt?

If this is the case, maybe Tinkle needed someone with some size to throw in their in case of an emergency. Just in case Selvig's foot eventually causes him to miss the rest of the season.

I suspect because both Hutchison and Selvig have had injuries that may limit practice time, leaving the Griz a little short of bodies.

I doubt Roper is playing to fill in for bigs. He is thin as a rail. I do know Stauds has been under the weather, may even be playing hurt still, but we will never know. Michael Taylor is banged up. We have been very inconsistent from the perimeter. Roper has swingman experience, and from I hear a solid perimeter shot. Our perimeter game inconsistencies are the sole reason this team has as many losses as we do. Maybe Roper has the attitude to compete, maybe help the team, and rather it be him or one of our other perimeter players, maybe this is what it will take to bring our perimeter game together.

It probably started due to necessity and manning due to illness and sickness. I would be surprised if this is to help the bigs. He is not even close to a big, in basketball terms.

I have to believe Hutchison is redshirting. I seriously doubt Roper will see any real playing time for quite a while. He is not (yet) in BB shape and is just now starting to learn the offense and defense. Tinks said as much but also was also impressed with Roper's attitude and demeanor (I understand that he a fine young man) I'm sure this contributed to the decision to have him join the team. :)

I would bet Hutchison is in the same boat as Bobcat center Budnich. Budnich is not technically listed as a redshirt but has not played and suits up for games, but at this point it would take an act of god for him to see any playing time. Since neither play will play a minute of time (I think) this season will not count as one of their four season to play with in five. At this point barring a major injury of problem I would have a hard time of wasting this year as a redshirt year.

The game plan for the balance of the year: count on the three guys above to score and defend. Add to these three any of the remaining guys from the bench and rotate until you find a hot shooter, a hustler , a the guy that won't foul out. On those nights when everyone is cold or unmotivated or sick...in a desperate measure we put the Quarterback in. Am I oversimplifying the strategy?
I want a new coach. There, I said it.
