2-Jordan Hasquet F 6-9 245 Sr. 3V Missoula, Mont. (Sentinel HS)
3- Ryan Staudacher G 6-4 205 Jr. 2V Kirkland, Wash. (Lake Washington HS)
5-Ceylon Elgin-Taylor G 6-2 185 Sr. 1V Los Angeles, Calif. (Irvine Valley)
13-Michael Taylor G 6-4 190 So. TR/RS Brewster, Wash. (E. Washington Univ.)
15-Nyandigisi Moikobu F 6-6 200 Fr. HS Tacoma, Wash. (Rainier HS)
22-Shawn Stockton G 6-1 185 Fr. HS Spokane, Wash. (Ferris HS)
23-Anthony Johnson G 6-3 190 Jr. JC Tacoma, Wash. (Yakima Valley CC)
24-Derek Selvig F 6-11 215 Fr. RS Glendive, Mont. (Dawson County HS)

44-Jack McGillis F 6-6 210 Jr. TR/RS Missoula, Mont. (Oregon State)
45-Mathias Ward F 6-7 215 Fr. HS Gig Harbor, Wash. (Gig Harbor HS)

If you had to guess at a starting line-up to begin the season, how would it look? At this point I’d go with:

1 – Elgin-Taylor
2 – Staudacher
3 – McGillis
4 – Hasquet
5 – Qvale

6th man: Selvig

And you?

I tend to agree on the starting 5, but look for Mathias Ward to contend for 6th man and a good shot at Freshman of the Year in the BSC. And all this without a night at the Holiday Inn Express! :thumb:

based on seeing nothing, but remembering that Tinkle goal in the spring was to improve the athleticism of his team, I will go:

1 – Elgin-Taylor
2 – Johnson
3 – McGillis
4 – Hasquet
5 – Qvale

first off the bench

Sharp (for Hasquet, Qvale)
Vassey (for McGillis)
Taylor (for Elgin-Taylor)
Staudacher (for Johnson)

The shooting guard will be the most hotly contested spot on the roster. Each player has his own specialty to contribute in that spot, shooting, athleticism, ball handling skills etc. but Johnson has the best overall package.

Not sold on Selvig, Mslacat?

I would not take it as any slight against Selvig at all. I just think the very first big man to sub for Qvale or Hasquet will be Sharp. Sharp is game test and battle worn, and can play both positions. Normally I would only have picked 3 guys for your first reserves, but as I said you have a lot of depth at the 1-2-3 positions and I am not sure how that will all shake out by conference time, though I could see Taylor coming in for BOTH Elgin Taylor / Johnson, or Vassey for McGillis / Johnson or Staudacher for McGillis / Johnson, giving you your first eight players (rotation). My list is not meant to be a two deep, but your top eight / nine.

On the subject of Selvig I can see him playing quite a bit this year, but based on what I saw last year I really do not see him at the 3. He has the range and ball skills to play that positions, but I do not think he has quicks / athleticism at this point to play defence. Maybe down the road as he mentally grows into his 6-11 frame, but not a whole lot this year.

Just an opinion based on what I saw last year.

BTW I also tend to really down play the possible contributions of freshman (true or redshirt) until they take the floor in actual game. Freshmen can be rather inconsistent and fickle.

most obvious improvements: athleticism and depth
glaring weakness: burly tough enforcer (bring back dan beaudin!)
biggest potential contributor: new coach bill evans
butt on the hot seat: tinks (for all the progress i see being made with the program, montana fans will not sit tight for another .500 season;)
biggest question: will selvig live up to his three-star rep?
next biggest question: will shawn stockton at the most important postion in basketball adjust to the college game with the same talent and leadership abilities he demonstrated in high school?
another question: will any returnees have a break-out year (stauds, sharp, qvale?)
and final question: will any of the transfers other than mcgillis step-up big-time (johnson, taylor, banny?)
emerging stars: ward and stockton.
conclusion: tremendous upside potential but many questions marks amid the ultimate question--can this coaching staff get all this reputed talent to gel into a solid team?

I'm also intrigued by Moikobu. Will he contribute early in his career, or will he sit out and pump iron for a year?

Selvig has the tools to be a very unique and versatile player for the Griz. What role(s) will Tinks have him play? I could see him breaking into the starting five if he steps up and shows they need him on the floor. Imagine a 6-11 guy shooting teams out of their zone defense.

My feeling on Moikobu, is that he will redshirt, this year, Have a quiet freshman season as he adjusts to the small forward spot, and D-1 ball, take all he has learned during his red shirt year, and freshman year and have a break out sophomore year. The guy you need to look out for contributing very early is Ward.

Sounds like a taller Hasquet!
