UM lacrosse qualifies for U.S. national competition
By BETSY COHEN of the Missoulian
If you are a lacrosse fan, it's time to round up your pennies - and dollars - and hand them over to the University of Montana lacrosse team.
On Sunday, the never-say-die club that started its season practicing in local parking lots after a string of snowstorms snagged the conference crown at the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League Division B in Tacoma, Wash.
Despite the team's impressive showing, there's no time to wallow in glory, said team president Kevin Flynn.
National championships are May 15-19 in Dallas, Texas, and the team needs to raise $15,000 to pay for the squad's travel, food and lodging expenses.
“It's pretty much down to business right now,” said Flynn who called from Washington moments after UM won the conference title. “We'll take time to really celebrate after we do our fundraising and get back from nationals.”
Flynn might be getting down to business, but the hootin' and hollering that could be heard in background indicated the rest of the team was living it up on Sunday.
“We are really stoked,” Flynn said.
On Saturday, the Grizzlies pounded Southern Oregon University 13-0. On Sunday, the team secured the crown when the came from behind to beat Western Washington University 8-6.
Along with the win, several Grizzlies were named all-conference players and UM junior Townsend Hall was named the league's most valuable player overall.
Aside from winning the trophy, the best part of the trip was being mobbed by young star-struck fans, Flynn said.
“We ran a clinic this weekend while we're here in Tacoma, and we had over 100 kids trying to get Griz lacrosse posters,” he said. “It was really fun for us. They were trailing us for autographs.”
As for nationals, Flynn said the team is ready - it just needs some financial support from the fans.
“We've really clicked here at the end of the season,” Flynn said, “and we all know we have to pick up our game. We've been expecting to go back to nationals and now we are. It's good to be on pace.”
