Griz hoops season preview now up at GoGriz

A lengthy preview which -- though it could benefit by an additional edit for style and mechanics -- is now up at GoGriz.com.

Based on an interview with head coach, Travis DeCuire, the article provides a good picture of how DeCuire and his coaches plan to utilize the players on this year's team. DeCuire does not use the phrase, "no fear," as he often does while talking basketball strategy. But readers will get a good idea how the Montana coach intends to build his team to approach the upcoming season. Link is below:

The article incorrectly states the opening game against Whitworth is November 11, the game is November 3, according to the tickets, GoGriz schedule, and the poster.

Coach does not mention Lopez.

The coach probably was not asked about Lopez. Also not mentioned were two freshmen, Trevor Spoja and Jared Samuelson. Regardless of their situations (and I believe Lopez will be on the floor a lot) I believe whoever wrote this article (promotion/info published by the UM Sports Information Dept.) has the responsibility to mention every player. It's not a newspaper article where the writer may have to limit a focus on major players. The omission looks clearly careless to me (wondering how the players' families are feeling about the oversight).

FYI: Lopez did not play in Saturday's scrimmage because of (my interpretation) a heavily bandaged hand. He played well the previous week. Both Spoja and Samuelson played quality minutes Saturday. Samuelson, in particular, showed promise as a power forward with good offensive skills. Spoja is a good perimeter shooter. Both look like candidates to redshirt.

FWIW, I hear in the athleticism tests done by the strength & conditioning coaches Lopez graded as the best athlete on the team despite not finishing 1st in any individual test. If he can hit catch and shoot 3's he has major 3 and D potential!

I had pretty high hopes for Lopez coming in from Australia. His credentials were pretty awesome but for the most part , he hadn't been able to translate that to success in a Grizzly uni. Being a Jr this year, I would expect him to elevate his game and be much more of s threat, especially from the arc. I would also like to keep one of our two JC transfers off the floor if possible to reduce the number of Srs next year. Counting Rorie, Samuelson, and Spoja, that would be four redshirts though and would reduce the number of bodies producing this year.

The only scholarship JC transfer is Walter Wright, and he without question will be on the floor! :thumb:

Sorry, I wasn't considering him. I'm sure he'll be out there and will be needed. I was referring to Camel and Misipeka-Ward. I'm sure one of these guys if not both won't see too much action this year and could probably benefit from another year in the system. It would also even out our players by year of elegiblity some.

Camel and Misipeka-Ward are walk ons,no scholarships, so evening out the classes won't impact scholarships in this case. Barring injuries, I doubt they see much time this season.

I suppose Dunn might become a redshirt candidate if his injury recovery time goes longer than expected.

Sorry again for the confusion. I wasn't thinking of schollies but more along the lines of having 7 people leave the team after next year. The more I think about it though, it won't be as big a deal cus there will be a lot of guys younger then them playing considerable mins. I was thinking in terms of expierience lost in one season but Krslovic, Rorie, Oguine, Dejong, and Boehning will be playing good mins not to mention our two newest 3 star recruits.
