Griz had nice, but not great, showing and are good

Creighton is better, better shooting from 3 and the line, and has depth. I think they will beat Gonzaga on Saturday at Creighton.

I liked how the Griz played and showed. Played well, most of the time. No backing down. Looked like they more than belonged. More athletic than Creighton.

Creighton could shoot the 3, and shot great. Not just wide open 3's. Defended us well. I thought C was good inside and out. Disciplined. Could defend.

When the Griz started coming on later in the first half, and took lead, I thought Griz looked confident and C was starting to worry and make mistakes. Then, C answered big in the last several minutes of the half. And C came out tough early in second half and pushed their 9 point lead up. Every time UM surged, C more than answered.

Big game by Oguine and Pridgett (mostly first half). The backup bigs looked credible. Rorie played fine, but couldn't get going scoring and with outside shot. Morehead couldn't get his shot going. Wasn't as good as he usually is. Manuel also could'nt get it going. Dorsey was okay but not big. He will be a better player with Akoh on the court.

Thought Griz got too impatient on offense in both halves. Took shots too early, with no one on the boards. Not bad or covered shots, but too early.

Got killed on the boards, judging by stats. Need to shot free throws better. Shot pretty well. Drove a number of times. Didn't look weak on D.

Attendance: 16,500.

But, I'm fine with the showing. More than fine. Feel good about it. Actually, liked how the Griz played and played with confidence.

Good measurement. Team will certainly learn from this, and I think gain confidence. Griz can play with this caliber of team. Needs to play tougher and be more consistent. Close, but no cigar.

Respect your opinion, but totally disagree with this entire paragraph.

So Pridgett scored more in the second half? Griz shot excellently from the free throw line? Griz shot terribly? Creighton shot horrible percentages even with no defense? Oh, perhaps the attendance was actually 590, like BSC games.

You are either just trying to instigate PR or didn't watch the game. I would agree with most of what he posted. There are a few things that I see as debatable, otherwise was a pretty solid summary.

I too like Player Rep's summary. But.

There are Eternal Verities in Basketball, and if you don't honor these Verities, the Basketball Gods will smite you.

Verity One: You have to make your free throws! One of the things that makes the Warriors so lethal is their free-point shooting down the stretch--Curry at 90%, Thompson in the 80"s. Right now the only Griz I feel confident in is Rorie. And this is not a new problem. It plagued us last year, and is no different this year.

Verity Two: You have to Put the Ball in the basket! Actually, we've been doing that; both our field goal and three-point percentages are up from last year, and this is encouraging. But Creighton, at least last night, put the ball in the basket in ways I have not seen, collegiate or pro, in a long time. If they shoot that consistently from long-range, they'll be in the Final Four.

Verity Three: The three. It has changed the game. Be "old-school" if you want (Hi Charles!) but it's a whole new world out there, and if you can't consistently shoot the three, you might as well be a taxi cab up against Uber. Defense may keep us in games, but we've got to become a three-point threat.

No sir, just the portion of his post that I highlighted. And not trying to instigate PR at all, just saying that in my opinion I didn't think they look like they belonged or were more athletic than Creighton. but I guess I shouldn't say I disagreed with all of that particular paragraph because I do think the Griz played well at times.

Three sad but very salient points citay. Our FT shooting is abysmal and has been a chronic problem for some time. Better improve soon or it is going to cost us more games.

   I am so sorry...I didn't even see the highlighted portion because after I read the OP and saw your response I didn't even think to actually look at what you quoted! Was so irritated thinking was just generalizing, I just posted smart azz remarks to make my point. Had I actually saw that, I would say those are the debatable facts I was referring to! hahaha. Again, sorry about that.

I agree and although it didn't cost us the game per say last night, I think it certainly played into the final margin in more ways than 1. Sometimes shot selection changes down 11 vs 4, 18 vs 9. To be an elite team, you need to hit 75-80%. I'm not talking Duke, Kentucky, Kansas as they have superior athletes and until they play teams similar, it doesn't come into play. But as a BSC team, to even dream of upsetting someone, you need to be consistently that high. Even conference games will be decided at the line this year, and if they don't figure that problem out, this "dream" season that's already circling the drain, will fully flush soon.

I'm hoping this recent 55% showing of hitting the 3 is a sign of good things to come for this team from long range. The key will be consistency. It was good seeing multiple players hit 3's instead of just 1 or 2 players.

I think the Griz also had a nice showing despite the final score. Like MissoulaMarinerFan said the Griz shot the three really well. It's just that Creighton was shooting the 3 and all their field goals at a ridiculous rate, what was their 3-pt shooting average 63%+? It's nearly impossible to beat a team who is shooting like that.

Another factor was Creighton's depth vs. the Griz's depth. The Griz were reaching pretty deep and giving a lot of time to some new guys. Part of that was the foul trouble that a lot of the Griz got into early, it sure didn't help not having Akoh and Timmy play.

(Warning this paragraph is just me bitchin' about the refs.) My opinion was that there were as some pretty homerish reffing, when Creighton players drove to the basket or passed to the basket if a Griz player breathed harshly in their direction they got a call. That was almost all of the offense that Jefferson (sp?) player for Creighton had in the second half - run at the basket miss a lay/drop a pass and go to the line. Again I didn't even see contact on most of those foul calls.

That said Oguine took it to the rim with ease and the starters we had available looked more then capable playing against Creighton. The Griz just had a night when they didn't have all their top guys available and Creighton was shooting the lights out.

That being said, it isn't like the Griz were shooting terrible either (with the exception of the free-throw line). Also didn't help that Rorie didn't have the solid mid-range game he normally has as well. It was interesting watching the teams play - Creighton is a mirror image of the Griz that just does everything (or at least last night) at a higher level than the Griz.

Creighton could shoot the 3, and shot great. Not just wide open 3's. Defended us well. I thought C was good inside and out. Disciplined. Could defend.

Again, I liked, generally, how the Griz played and looked. I think they're a good team and will be much better with Akoh, and also need Falls. I gave them a bit of a pass for not having those guys. Rebounding and scoring would have been better with Akoh.

Griz took too many early shots at times, especially in second half. Need to correct.

Griz didn't play good enough defense, but didn't play poorly. The UM big guys don't trap out front near as well as Kryslovich, and now teams are prepared that the out front trap too, like Creighton seemed to be.

Moorehead needs to find his shot, like he had to find it last year too. I'm sure he will.

The team is the same as last year, except one year older, plus Dorsey and Manuel, minus Kryslovich. Griz also have more, but young, post back up. Those guys will improve as the season goes on.

I thought Creighton was terrific.

I think I heard that Pridgett made more 3's in the game than he may all of last year.

I like PR’s assessment, and yeah, FT’s were awful! Zootown, I totally agree on this paragraph! Akoh would have bought an inside presence to the game! He’s good for around 10 rebounds a game, and we all no about his inside game! He is our inside game and muscle! Timmy would have boroughs his high energy to the game, off or on the bench, and the Game would have been much closer with both of these guys! This was a great barometer for our team, and this team probably isnt happy with their showing, but I think they are on their way there! Creighton is easily a top 25 or team, and this game is going to-like last year-make this team better during the conference season game. Glad to see Travis hacks the big picture in mind, when waiting for Jamar and Falls be healthy before throwing them on the court before they were truly ready! Go Griz!
