GRIZ/cat Basketball round 1 game thread

Good win tonight. Ugly, but a good win. Just hoping CET will get to play so AJ can focus on scoring, man can he score!

Go Griz!

A very ugly 1st half for both teams offensively. The 2nd half though the GRIZ played well offensively. I liked many things tonight for the GRIZ. (1) Rebounded as a team well, especially Sharp. (2) Hasquet stepped up in a few ways, he scored inside and his defense on Howard was the best I have seen Hasquet play defense. (3) Defense as a whole needs to be that good every game. (4) Bench played well. (5) We ran our offense and limited turnovers. (6) This coaching staff put together a great game plan. (7) Tinkle went with the hot hand finally. Meaning he continued to run plays for Johnson and let him go to work. That is something we have not seen Tinkle give into very often. Tonight though he had to do it, and I hope we do it again with whoever is hot any given night. (8) We kept the ball in the hands of guys who can shoot FTS (Johnson) and penetrated. (9) This team kept their head even when struggling offensively, they collectively stayed focused on tough defense and rebounding. Eventually the offense happened.

I think we still need to improve on rebounding, offensive depth, inside scoring, getting the ball to Hasquet and Sharp inside (hopefully Qvale when he improves offensively), more time for Selvig, 3 point shooting.

I am just as happy with the way the team played overall and the coaches proved they can coach than I am from the W. The W was just icing on the cake tonight. I leave this game with less doubt, more optimistic outlook. Yet I still have some questions as to if they can do the little things collectively every game for 40 minutes. I am 50/50 on knowing if this game will turn out to be the turning point of this season. That is a huge improvement from prior to this game.

This GRIZ fan is elated with the way this team played. However, on the CAT side, I would be very disappointed with bad FT shooting, and offensive struggles.

Way to go AJ (31 points - 15 for 16 at line). Way to go Cat Freethrow shooters (17 - 34 from freethrow line. Those were the difference in the game. Cats make 75% of those missed shots and it would have possibly turned the game around. Not only would the be within 5 but also, they wouldn't have had to put Griz (AJ) on the line as often.

I for one think AJ should take over point. Only 2 turnovers in 38 minutes. Great improvement from previous games. CET needs to come back, but for backup purposes only.

I personally do not care if AJ is playing PG or SG. I just hope the coaches continue to find ways to get the ball in his hands when we need offense. I am all for us doing whatever is necessary to get him the ball! When needed, lets do with him what EWU used to do with Stuckey.

I am not saying we have to use him this way every game, but right now I think we should. Our offense has been struggling too much for us to not use him this way. It was a world of difference tonight. Good game GRIZ!!!!!!!

The way we were fouling inside five minutes one would have thought we were down. Thank God they didn't make their FT's tonight or it would have been a fairly easy Cat win.

A fairly easy cat win had they made their free throws? Closer, but not an easy win. Of course, Johnson hitting 15 out of 16 free throws helped the Griz free throw % a ton. AJ was a pleasure to watch. The Cats have a quick team. They also had nobody who could guard AJ. :D Michael Taylor also played very well (except for his outside shooting). I think his presence on the floor really helped take some pressure off of AJ.

Nice win for the Griz.

AJ carried the team on his shoulders. He shot lights out. 15-16 from the line!

The Cats overall looked weak, although Rush is a real nice player, and they have some quickness at the guard position. They need to feed it to Mbunga.

Hasquet needs to rebound. One rebound is simply not acceptable, especially when the guards get 6-7 each. I saw him get outrebounded on many occasions due to lack of effort. If I were Tinkle, I'd play Selvig and I'd let Hasquet sit. (He did, however, have some nice offensive moves around the basket.)

I love McGillis' hustle. He got some early fouls and didn't get back in the game, but he plays with heart.

Sharp played well as a starter. A good move by Tinks.

Overall, the Griz shot poorly (other than AJ), but they got it done.

A much much better effort! even with dismal shooting in the first half..the defense was improved. I think Hasquet D on Howard was very good..the bench was very productive as well,,and game ball to Taylor,,7 rebounds and just a much better preformance...finally a bit of confidence and hope. 2 more conf games at home, keep it up!

Both teams shot the ball poorly, but it looked as though Montana was simply missing great looks while the cats were often missing because of solid defense, or because they were firing up a poor shot either very early in the shot clock, or very late in the clock due to the Griz D. The Griz certainly seemed to be the better team.

Easily the ugliest first half of basketball in the history of the world...

I thought this was the best job Tinks has done in coaching thus far. Loved how we kept the ball in AJ's hands. Loved that we let Hasquet go to work in the post mid way in the second half, went to him 3 times in a row with good results, what a great turnaround fade he's got. Kyle Sharp played well, I think he should continue to start. I like that Jack hustles around the court but he's gotta learn to pick his spots, he picked up a couple of overly agressive offensive fouls when he shouldn't have been forcing the issue. He did get a couple of loose balls that were big.
Good win.
