I was talking with the ROTC guys before the game and they said UM will be retiring the cannon at the end of this season. I think this would make a hell of a story for the UM newspaper because this thing is an icon IMO.

Hopefully this isnt true...too much change...they cant screw us like this..especially after the change to the Grizzly in midfield

They retired this cannon once for a new one. But, the new one was too powerful. So, my guess is they found another one that fulfills our needs.

Probably the cannon due for retirement, as is the case in these old artillery pieces they over time develop 'muzzle fatigue' and there is the danger they could explode upon any future discharge. A lot of the old school stuff slowly develops microscopic cracks from use/age..and this one has been discharge MANY times...go Griz?

if memory serves, when a piece of artillery is retired they insert a plug into the barrel to make it inoperable to fire. Seems to me at that point in time they could donate it to the bobkitties to use for their home games!

Yes, they said they were going to get a new cannon. The old one will be moved somewhere on campus and displayed.
