Griz 75, Saint Mary's 68

Another awesome game by the Griz today. Beat a tough Saint Mary's 75 to 68 behind the scoring of Kamaar Davis's 19 points and 6 rebounds. He was the Tournament MVP.

Other leading scorers were Steve Horne with 12 points, Booker with 10 points, and Seyfert with 9 points. Seyfert lead the team with 8 rebounds.

This team is looking good this year. Primary problem they are having early in season is turnovers. Hopefully they will work hard at reducing them.

Go Griz!!!!

You're right. For Griz fans out there: if you're going to jump on this team's bandwagon, do it early so you aren't all Johny-come-lately's. There are plenty more wins on the way this year.
The attendence tonight was pitiful. I think they announced it as 2,600 and change. So much for scheduling the tournament championship on a Sunday night. This team deserves more fans than what they get. The Griz are on their way, and will likely be in the running for the Big Sky Championship. In any event, they should at least sweep the Cats this year to partially rectify our bad football fortunes.

Let's all go to Dahlberg this Saturday and support the Griz against San Francisco. It should be another good game against a good team.

Steve Horne had been struggling in part due to illness. He really had a fine game coming off of the bench as did Roy Booker. Davis is simply fun to watch. He scores underneath and also steps out and shoots in the 3. St. Mary's has a very big and athletic team. I think they will do very well this year. I agree about the Saturday/Sunday format. I hope future tournaments go back to the Friday/Saturday format. This has the makings of a very fine and exciting GRIZ season. The team desreves more fan support. Those who come out will be glad they did.

Sunday is the worst day to schedule basketball games, and top it off being a holiday, you will get a lower turnout. Plus, many fans are still not over the fact that the football season is over.

Can anyone remember the last tiem we had such a dominant inside defense? Both teams we played in the tournament became afraid to take it inside. Wow!

Thanks to Seyfert for this.

we haven't had a legititmate inside presence defensively since Engellant in my opinion. If the Griz play defense like their hair is on fire, I think we may be cutting nets down in March. Big Sky Tourney nets that is.......

I agree - I watched Saturday nights games, unfortuantely missed Sunday's, but listened to the 2nd 1/2 on the radio. Thought Seyfort looked great. I think when he plays well it also he opens things up for Davis. Both SEMU and St. Mary's really keyed on shutting down the perimeter - they had Criswell mugged all night. Last year we would eb 1-3 right now.

Now teams are going to have to stop our inside game, and Criswell and Cummings can drain 3's all night.

Also thought the intensity and hustle was awesome. Booker moved them up the court and the rest of the team stayed with him. It is definately time to get excited about Griz basketball.

Our inside presence should improve too once we get Chris McKay back. He got the boot off his foot last week and he said he'd be back in about 2 weeks.

Cummings and Criswell aren't the only guys who can shoot 3s either...Mansell had a couple as did Davis. Cummings hasn't been hitting his quite as well as he did his last season but it'll come around. He's improving every game, its just a matter of trusting that his body will react the way he wants it to.

loyal- I agree that Darren Engellant was a great inside defender! I'd have to say that Brent Smith was also a great inside presence. It is a real shame that he was injured much of his senior year. Speaking of 3 point shooters, Steve Horne is also an excellent one and has the quicks to create lots of 3 point opportunities. Steve had and outstanding game against St. Mary's. I also liked coach Kennedy's use of Brent Cummings at a post position at times. This allows Brent and Steve Horne to be on the floor at the same time.

Coach Kennedy said that he'll use Brent both inside and outside. He can play almost every position on the court. He could probably play point guard too but he's a bit too big for that at this level.
