Griz 69 - Thunderbirds 57

The Griz didn't look too impressive in the first half and were only up by 1 at halftime (27 - 26). Their offense definitely played a lot better in the second half. They shot 28.6% in the first half, 55% in the second.

Kamarr Davis had a good game, scoring 20 points & grabbing 5 rebounds. One nice surprise was Andrew Strait. He looked very confident and seemed right at home in the low post. He scored 16 points and had 7 rebounds. Strait & Davis both at the post at the same time should cause a lot of defenses problems since they both can score and both aren't afraid to be physical inside.

Matt Martin kept the turnovers down this game (had 3), and scored 9 points, had 3 rebounds and 2 assists. From what I've seen so far this season the offense runs better with Martin at the point. He also is a good defender. He does get out of control every once in a while and tries to force passes sometimes. I'd still like to see Virgil Matthews at the point though based on what I saw in the scrimmage early in the year & a little in one of the exhibition games. He only played 7 minutes this game, and hit the only shot (a 3) that he took.

If you look at Lamarr Farr's stats, they don't look too impressive, but he played a hell of a game. His defense is great & if the Griz had hit most of the layups or close range shots he created, he would've had about 8+ assists. He always seems to be looking for the open guy and I think is the best passer on the team by far. He brought the ball down the floor a couple times later in the second half. From what I remember he used to be the press breaker for the JC team he played for, and would play point whenever the opposing team pressed. Farr had 4 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 turnover.

Overall I think the Griz looked very good in the second half. Martin at the point is fun to watch, but he does make some freshman mistakes (which is expected of a true freshman). Criswell had a off night shooting (1-7fg & 0-6 3pt), but played good defense and grabbed 7 rebounds.

What really seemed to turn the game around for the Griz in the 2nd half was when they started pressing Southern Utah. The Griz had 2 quick steals which turned into 5 points in a period of about 10 seconds. That really got the crowd & players fired up and forced Southern Utah to take a timeout.

One final note. Curtis Lincoln, who was being recruited by the Griz according to some recruiting sites, had 12 points 3 assists and a couple steals. He also had 5 turnovers though. The Griz defense forced quite a few turnovers this game. Southern Utah had 21 turnovers, the Griz had 15.

I was at the game and think Dexter sums it up pretty well! I too like Farr a ton (multi-dimensional to say the least). Strait and Martin are playing very well for true freshmen and were tremendous recruits. Strait gives the GRIZ some additional inside scoring and toughness that will really help take some pressure off of Davis.

Was at the game and agree with all of above. Also, is Dlouhy fun to watch or what?! And in addition to Farr's passes being great, he has the "craig ochs" touch of sometimes looking in the opposite direction of where he's passing. Cool.

Strait looks to be the most promising true freshman on the team. He looked good tuesday, and even better yesterday.
