Staudacher wins 3-point contest

It didn’t stop him from making the trip to Butte to win the event’s first-ever 3-point Contest, sponsored by Knight, Dahood, Everett and Sievers, Saturday at East Junior High Gym.

Staudacher, a player from last year’s University of Montana team that made it to the NCAA tournament, drained 16 points to edge out five other competitors that finished with 15.

It didn’t look like it, but it was a first for the Griz guard.

“I’ve never done one of these before,” Staudacher said. “I got 16. I didn’t think it would hold up, but it did.”

Jared Smithson, Matt Luedtke, Chris Bond and Shea Bradshaw were all among players that scored 15.

Bradshaw missed his final shot, a moneyball that would have given him 17 points.

With the win, Staudacher took home a Cruise that’s valued at $2,400.

Needless to say, it was probably well worth the 120-mile journey from Missoula.

“It’s such a cool thing about this competition,” Staudacher said. “Trip of a lifetime.”

Teams in the Shootout are set to close out the final day of the tournament with championship games on Sunday.

The Men’s Open semifinals will be on display at Butte East Junior High with semifinals beginning at 10 a.m.

In the first game, Desert Horse will play McKeon and Dowd.

The 11 a.m. matchup will see Leo McCarthy Insurance against Rocky Mountain Insulators.

The championship will tip off later in the day at 5 p.m.

The Men’s 35-and-Older Division will conclude with a title game at 5 p.m.

The Men’s B chipper will be played at the McKinley Annex on Broadway St. at 10 a.m.

Round robin games will continue in the Women’s and Coed divisions on Sunday morning.
