Another swipe at the Griz by Rachac in Gazette. This time he takes delight in saying Selvig isn't a great coach. See Griz News Board. Get tired of this guy.

Go back and read the article. He mentions 5-6 times how great a coach Selvig is, but he asks a legitimate question. Would Selvig have all those wins at a non-major school? Thus it falls on you to make the determination. I read that article as nothing but good towards the Griz.

He's probably more spot-on than anyone wants to admit. It's not like he didn't spout anything that wasn't true. I think his comparison of Missoula to Spokane, essentially, was a bit off base. That's about it.

I differ in my opinion even after rereading the article and taking several of his previous editorials in consideration. Given Selvig's win percentage over an extended number of years indicates excellance in any conference or division. Naturally, we do not compete well with the larger schools from the power conferences in any sports on a consistent basis. The amount of wins over an expanded period of time is telling even if it was little league. To buy into his argument would assume that our level of talent is on par with a Uconn. or Tennessee. We know that is not the truth.

Making an assumption or conclusion by comparing Gonzaga's run this year is not valid. Gonzaga was a team carried by one player for the most part much like the we were in Shannon Cates era. For his argument or point to be valid, one would have to see Gonzaga's program for a period of twenty or so years. As has been discussed in several threads throughout this site, we know that from football to basketball or any other sport we don't have equal dollars for recruiting. Based on his article, Dean Smith at North Carolina or Tom Osborn at Nebraska were arguably not great coaches until they validated their carreers by winning a national champioinship. Something that took both of them over twenty years. Had Dean Smith never won a championship, he still would be considered a great based off of total body of work in my opinion.

Gonna get killed for saying this. I will start by saying i could not care less about womens basketball at any level unless my sister is playing. but always cheer for griz basketball. I am very glad we have Coach Selvig. he has been loyal to the university to a degree that 99% of coaches in america would not but...

i have always felt he is greatly overrated as a coach by griz nation. excellent win total and percentages. i just feel if he was as good as some think we would be more than we are after all this time.

sorry just an opinion

For the most part I can not argue with any of Rachac points in his story. I do think that you can not compare Montana basketball to Gonzaga basketball for the fact that Basketball, mens or womens, is the king sport at Gonzaga.

Selvig is "greatly overrated"? Try talking to other coaches across the country. To a person they will tell you that Selvig is a great Coach. Hell, he has the worst recruiting budget in the BSC, and has dominated it anyway. Big time programs have tried to lure him away several times. Of course, this was before your "expert analysis". I am sure O'Day is going to think long and hard about keeping Selvig around now knowing a good coach could easliy have 1000 wins by now. Yeah, Selvig sucks.

I assume his budget is low because he has proven in the past that he does not need it to complete in the BSC. Teams are now starting to show parity so you might want to increase the budget. His salary is the top in the Big Sky I believe. With a bigger budget he might complete better in the NCAA tournament or is that something that is not that important in the Athletic Department. They could probably find a little money if they looked under their mattress.
