Hey there, Grizzlies. I, with the help of two others, operate a DU message board and blog. We were hoping you'd be willing to participate in a Q and A with us about the upcoming game as well as life in general.

You can find our board at:

http://duquesnedukes.yuku.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And the blog is:

http://yukudukes.blogspot.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you guys are interested, we'd be looking to exchange about 6-8 questions. Let me know! I'll check back in the AM.

I couldn't find an active blog and this seemed like the most natural place to ask!

BTW, our questions are set. I'll post them tomorrow and we can go from there. We'd love to return the favor; just let us know.

If you want to post here I'll filter through them. You could also email [email protected]

1) We really don't see teams from Montana that often, if ever. What are some things about the Grizzlies that you think Duquense fans should know? When was the last time you hosted a team from out east in a conference like the A10 or CAA?

2) Everyone has their journey for the season. How did you guys get here? After the loss in the Big Sky Title game, are the fans excited for a little more basketball?

3) Duquesne plays a high speed style that is focused on turning opponents over and getting baskets in transition. Based on your size, record, and stats, it seems that the Grizzlies look to play a methodical game based on a solid half court offense. Your relatively low PPG but high shooting percentages underscore that. What do you expect the play style to look like in this game?

4) Neither team has shot well from the foul line this year. Certainly it has cost the Dukes a few games; 5 or 6 strategically placed points and the Dukes could be 22-8 right now. Where has it hurt Montana the most?

5) Most teams have a guy that could score 4 points one night then go off for 24 the next. BJ Montiero was one last year for the Dukes, though has found consistency this year. Who is a guy on your team who could go off in such a way (beyond your players who average in double figures)?

6) Earlier you played UCLA and won at their place. (a) What were the keys to how you won there, and (b) What did your team learn?

7) TJ McConnell has been a big part of the Dukes this year, sliding into a starting role as a freshman and winning Conference ROY. The Grizzlies' Kareem Jamar seems to have had a positive presence for your team, averaging 7.5 PPG and just under 5 RPG. How much has it meant for you to have a freshman who can come in and play meaningful minutes right away?

8) One team must leave disappointed. Who will it be and what will the final score be?

Hey The Face, I'll take a stab at a few of the questions...I'll only post the ones that I can answer to, maybe others can answer the other ones...

3). Oddly enough, we seem to play our best ball when we get out in transition. We may appear to be a half-court team, because of our low scoring, but most of our low scoring can be attributed to a lack of a real consistent outside threat (we have a couple guys that are decent from outside when they are on (Selvig, Jamar, Cherry) and our tenacious defense. This team is very, very good defensively, and when we are on, we play lock-down D, and use that to push the pace on offense.

5). We have a couple guys like that this year. One is Selvig. When he is feeling it, he could easily drop 20, with 5 assists, and 5 or more boards, but he isn't very consistent. The other is Art Steward, depending on what the other team gives us, he can explode for points occasionally.

7). Jamar has been a lift for us, mostly because he is such a good rebounder for a true frosh, but he also has very good court presence. Last year, we had a true frosh point guard (Will Cherry), that has turned into an absolute monster this year, getting more consistent with his outside and free-throw shooting, as well as being one of the nations best pick-pockets (Top 10 in the nation in steals per game for most of the year). If he is feeling it, he can give opposing teams fits with his electric all-around play.

8). Haven't seen Duquesne play this year, but if the "good Griz" show up (the team that beat UCLA, Oregon State, and the team that held Weber State score-less the last 8 minutes of our last victory), I like our chances a-lot. 65-60, Griz win.

[UM has never played Duquense. Don't recall when UM may have hosted or played A10 or CAA hoops teams, but we compete against the CAA in football, and have played home and home football games and competed in the playoffs.]

2) Everyone has their journey for the season. How did you guys get here? After the loss in the Big Sky Title game, are the fans excited for a little more basketball?

[UM had to replace the majority of its team from last year, when we made the ncaa tourney and competed fairly well against New Mexico. Except the senior center Qvale, the team is fairly young, true frosh and JC transfers. Yes, fans are excited for more basketball, but a bit disappointed we didn't make the ncaa tourney or get an NIT bid. We lost our last game of the season, and as a result the right to host the conference tourney, and lost a close game in the conference championship.]

[Nope, not quite right. While UM likes to pound the ball inside to the bigs, it also likes to attack in transition. The point guard, Cherry, is very athletic, a good ball handler, and can take it to the hoop and finish. UM usually has good shot selection. UM plays very good defense, both zone and man. I assume will keep doing what it's been doing, on both O and D. While I haven't seen you play, I assume our bigs will be able to score against you.]

4) Neither team has shot well from the foul line this year. Certainly it has cost the Dukes a few games; 5 or 6 strategically placed points and the Dukes could be 22-8 right now. Where has it hurt Montana the most?

[UM has been hurt most by inconsistency, altho that improved over the season. UM was also hurt mid-season by an injury to the point guard for a handful of games, and other injuries. Free throw shooting has improved as the season has progressed, but can still be inconsistent. Inconsistent shooting of 3's has also been a problem.]

5) Most teams have a guy that could score 4 points one night then go off for 24 the next. BJ Montiero was one last year for the Dukes, though has found consistency this year. Who is a guy on your team who could go off in such a way (beyond your players who average in double figures)?

[Ward, a back-up post. Perhaps Woods, a back-up shooting guard, but he hasn't yet gotten off this year.]

6) Earlier you played UCLA and won at their place. (a) What were the keys to how you won there, and (b) What did your team learn?

[We played well, our bigs ate up UCLA, and our point guard was better than UCLA's, at least that night. We also beat Oregon St at home. We lost several close games against pretty good teams, and that was generally because we weren't consistent for the whole game.]

[Jamar was a starter before being injured. He's a very good player. His injury and recovery, where he wasn't getting many minutes, has skewed down his stats. He's a talent. He committed early, and then started getting Pac-10 interest, but stayed with his committment.]

8) One team must leave disappointed. Who will it be and what will the final score be?

[I'd like to think we'll win at home, but some of your closer games with top teams earlier in the season have me concerned. Also, one of our starting guards was injured in the first half of the tourney, and I don't know his status. It should be a good game.]

Questions for you. How did you manage to lose so many of your games later in the season? With the your good start and fairly close losses to very good teams, it seems like you should have won more games in your last 9 or so. Did you have injuries?

How many of your fans will travel to the game? Anyone who does will be welcomed and treated very well in Missoula.

Here are some of the games we have played against "eastern teams" where we hosted at home. Some not so eastern.

1999-00 - We beat Youngstown State (Summit) 103-83
1996-97 - We beat American (CAA) 77-68
1994-95 - We lost to Mississippi State (SEC) 80-75
1992-93 - We beat Bucknell (Patriot) 63-60
1989-90 - We beat Monmouth (Northeast) 56-53
1989-90 - We beat Boston University (America East) 73-64
1984-85 - We beat Northeastern (America East) 81-80
1980-81 - We beat Maine (America East) 58-58

No A-10's though.

Interesting to note that in 2006-07 we played West Virginia & Virginia Tech on back-to-back nights on a neutral court - I assume it was a tournament. Cant remember which though. We lost both, but beat Minnesota in that same tournament.

Will Cherry is the key to this team. When he is doing what Will Cherry can do, we are damn hard to defend. He can hurt you with his Defense just as much as he can on the break. The guy is touch as nails being from Oakland. Qvale can be dominant or dormant, but don't think he won't block a shot because he is big and white. He is the all time leading shot blocker in BSC History and is over 90 on the season. Selvig has a grat handle for a 7 footer and shoots 40% from 3. Jamaar is tough when on. The loss of Stockton to injury hurts us at the guard position. I would let Woods launch 3's all day.

Come out to Big Sky Country, you will have a great time and won't need any $$ in the bars downtown if you are with Griz fans. :thumb:

1) It surprised all of us, too, to an extent. Mostly the quality of our opponents got better, though things really turned around when St. Bonaventure beat us on a last second shot. Two of the three A10 NCAA teams were on our schedule in the latter third of the season, as was URI (who is in the CBI but had a case for an NIT spot) and our rematch with Dayton (who was one game away from making the NCAAs). I think it affected the confidence of the team. Almost all of our losses have been close, many could have been decided by one or two points - either to win outright, or to keep a game out of overtime.

2) Unfortunately, on a Wednesday night, not many. I'd love to go but it just isn't possible. It sounds like you guys are pretty friendly, so I guess it's my loss!

One of our posters looked on Orbitz and found a travel package... for $1700...

Priceline has air and hotel packages, from Pitts to Missoula on 15th to 17th, for $1283 per person. Orbitz was higher. I didn't check any other sites. With hotel, you can sometimes find price anomolies.

Hey, forgot to ask this - do you guys tend towards a man defense or zone defense?

More zone, but also play man. Usually switch back and forth in games, with more of one played based on the opposing team and the success of one or the other. One of our asst coaches was a long-time head coach and a defensive specialist, so the chatter is that he's helped with the defensive schemes in recent years.

You will see both. Regardless of which defense we play, you will likely see a great defense. Cherry is a ball hawk, and Qvale swats what does get inside. Many players that get their hands on many passes, and lose balls.
