I watch everyone of their games just to root for whoever they're playing.

Envy....Loathing....
Call it what you want but these two teams/fan bases hate each other and that's what makes this rivalry so special.

Only on bulletin boards. I've driven all around Bozeman in a car that said University of Montana on the side of it, and had no problems. Just friendly banter.

If I remember correctly, didn't a poster have his car keyed?!

Alpha.

What I like best about the Cat haters is the sparkling wit. Some drooling moron comes out with 'Cat's suck,' for the thousandth time with the smirking certainty that his fellow diaper pissing simpletons will meet it with the awe of a dung beetle hearing a call to the nearest horse turd. You truly have to be a case of arrested development to take part in it. A little rivalry is one thing, but the raving dementia of the dingalings on this board is truly grotesque.

+1 Great Post. I grew up in Missoula, and never quite understood the hate and envy of each other.
I never really sensed it on the Missoula end. I attended MSU for some summer engineering credits years ago, and like the place just fine. MSU has had lots of community outreach through the Extension Service and 4-H and such. Never really found any hostility in the Missoula community towards "Bozeman." They had a terrific president over there in Roland Rennie, who was well-liked throughout the state.

But, holy cow, not true on the other end of the pavement. We were hosting an athletic event here in Missoula, years ago, and a good friend of mine, an MSU coach, was leaving early for an event back in Bozeman. I joked about why it was so urgent to attend an athletic event they were sure to lose, and wow, I got some major hostility over that. I was completely taken by surprise at the sensitivity of MSU partisans to the "in-state rivalry."

Since then, with the arrival of the internet and fan boards, the odd attitude they have over there is a matter of record. I don't necessarily understand it, even yet, but it certainly earns the reaction it gets from some UM fans.

I love watching the cats fail. It warms my heart like puppies and hand jobs. That said, nothing was sweeter then in 2011 when they were ranked number one (first time in school history) the week of the cat-Griz game. That was the week of all the 'changing of the tide' and 'turning of the guard'. Every cat fan was puffed up and cocksure that week. FINALLY, their time was at hand.

Then the Griz destroyed them at home in the Litter Box.

That degree of suffering was truly beautiful and worth the preceding weeks of hype and smack talk by the cat fans. For me, It isn't if the cats will suffer and fail each year, it's how hard they suffer and fall that is the true measure of my joy. This year-long collapse, following another July Preseason Championship and BEST February recruiting class ever, is anti-climatic and kind of sad. Reminds me of The Streak years.

I don't routinely root for the cats during the season, but maybe I should?

Yeah, riiiight ... cave in to these pathetic juveniles and their adolescent cat problem. I'm from Montana ... ancestors going back to the nineteenth century before the homesteaders. My team is the Griz, but after that, I'm for any other Montana team. When them forn out of state bastards see a score involving any Montana team all they know is that it's Montana versus someone else ... they don't make distinctions and neither do I. Montana uber alles ... and FTC only when the Griz are playing them. This inane foolishness is disgusting to anyone who is not a totally infantile moron and it has reached grotesque proportions. There must be a few adults on here who find it as idiotic and, mainly, as redundant and endlessly boooooooooooring as I do. Stand the f*** up for yourselves.

+1 Great Post. I grew up in Missoula, and never quite understood the hate and envy of each other. And yes there is envy when you see numerous Bobcat threads pop every week - AND they're losing, and they're created by Griz fans.
This is not envy, it's schadenfreude--pleasure derived by someone from another person's misfortune.

Hahaha!

Almost even better than the game was ESPN's camera crew at the bar where the cats were watching the selection show, obviously scheduled before the beatdown heard 'round the world. Coach Ron Ash looked like a poor guy in a country song that just lost his wife, dog and truck. It was only 9:00 am, but man, he looked plastered. Can't really blame him since he knew a one'n'done was headed his way.

Khakis looked great though.

"... beatdown heard 'round the world." That pretty well sums up the kind of tiny, trivial world the pathetic Cat obsessives live in. Jee ... zus, what do you poor, pea brained peckerwoods play with when you don't have your tattered, little nerf balls with 'Grizzlies' printed on them in perma-marker around to suck on?

Jeezus Bruno lighten up this is a Fan messageboard. Serious question though, How long you been a cat fan?

GFY.

You're just a blowhard douche bag with a thesaurus.

That's a good one, Ursa ... you've finally managed to move beyond FTC. Some of us can use those yuuuuge three syllable words without a thesaurus like the one you haven't managed to master. Btw, someone needs meds ... is there a stupid pill out for guys like Everett on the horizon? Maybe it'll help him get over his dreams of greater vicarious glory in, you know, one of those rilly big conferences where our shrinking university belongs. In real life, that's a place 'Little Brother' will much more likely arrive at before we do.

No, that’s the problem … it’s not a fan message board; it’s an encounter group for psycho-driveling anancephalics who like inflicting their scabby obsessions on every poor bastard who tries to read anything here. Why not form yourselves a little sub-group of fellow louse pickers with a chimp trainer to oversee it? Please. And, WOW! you hit me with the nuclear bomb, dude, with that Cat fan thing. However, I do realize cretinism is incurable and will leave you shit-riddled monkeys to your favorite pastime from now on … but it was long past time somebody made the point. It’s one of the main reasons you’ve seen a big fall off in posters with something to say.

What's the opposite of that? Because it seems to work for this years political race. There is much pain.

Ha. Depends on what you mean by opposite? Do you mean pain derived by someone from another person's good fortune? Or do you mean pleasure derived by someone from another person's good fortune?

There is no real word for the first definition. But, this seems to be catching on--gluckschmerz. Of course, you may consider this envy too.

The second definition may be considered 'compassion'.
