Relative to Delaney (and Pflugrad) Gragg is young. He in the top five of all-time Griz favorites. He will have a much longer honeymoon than most. I just hope his HC candidacy in 2014 is contingent upon UM having a successful offense in 2013.

i think gragg could be a good head coach honestly. although this and the DD thread have had me curious about something. is it far more risky for all time griz greats to put their playing reputation on the line to be a coach? i have yet to meet a single riz fan that doesn't absolutely love DD. but what if he became coach and had a couple losing seasons? wonder what the reaction would be....

same goes for gragg. by all accounts he's a great person. and there is no doubt that he's maybe the best linemen to ever play in the big sky. he went on to have a brilliant nfl career and he's a griz legend. will be really interesting to see if any of that becomes tarnished to some fans after a couple "down" seasons.

on this note....if i was DD i would NEVER consider coaching atum. better to be always known as the G.O.A.T. :thumb:

I read this and thought of Bart Starr. Great player, terrible coach.

I had a similar thought. Seems like most good coaches were so-so players, e.g., Gary Kubiak. I can't think of one that was a great player and good coach. Was phil jackson that great of a player? Usually its an ego thing with great players becoming coaches (Isiah Thomas), they simply can't relate to poor execution. But i doubt super-dave would have that problem. He's more like the fat girl that has to work extra hard to get a date.

my only OPINION is that if i was a god like DD is....i would be very cautious to ever come back and coach for the griz because it would be hard for him to do as a coach what he did as a player. sorry that is such a stupid opinion to have.
ILTC, I totally agree with you!

Yup, being a Cat fan I would love to be able to say something negative about DD. The point is,
I can't. I knew kids that were no-body's that went all the way through school with him here in
Great Falls and they all said the same thing; Couldn't hate on him because he was such a good
guy. His mom and dad are also very fine folk. (Imagine that). Dad says Dave loves it in Calgary
and is now playing hockey for fun.(I bet he's pretty good for a late starter). It would be cool
to see though.

They can search the universe, but unless they're willing to make a long-term commitment to somebody, and pay a decent salary, who will they attract?

Don Read, Mic Dennehey, Joe Glenn, Bobby Hauck all come to mind..... an FCS school will ALWAYS be a stop over. If we doble the salaries and even tripled the salaries we wouldn't get any better than we have had and would still be losing out to the multi million contracts at the next step.

We have had the most succesful program at FCS for some time, what has salaries had to do with that? and for that matter what do salaries have to do with our current situation???

I think that often great players don't really understand why they are great, they are born with superior talent and use that to be great. The skills required to be a great player (size, speed and athletic ability) are different that the skills to be a great coach (organization, motivation, recruiting and game planning and management). In some respects they have little in common.

Is Mr. Gragg going to install an all new offense next year? I really have no idea as to whether the Griz need a new system or simply a better job of play calling from the current playbook. Going back to ground zero sounds scary though.

   If we doubled or tripled our coaches salary you don't think we would have better applicants for the job!???!??? Now that is funny.

The world has changed since we hired even Bobby Hauck. If we are really the elite program you represent we are, we need to pay elite FCS salaries in order to keep good people. Perhaps even more important, we need to make long-term commitments to our head coaches. This is especially true since the Pflugrad debacle.

Mr. Hammer meet the head of Mr. Nail. Dead on All Weather. So very true and in my irrelevant and humble opinion - this is the exact reason we now have a mess on our hands. Way to much turnover over the past 3 years. App. State had it right with their head coach and his tenure - until this year that is

What will his legacy be when the Griz put 2012 and the mehem(sp) surrounded by it behind and become national contenders again? We have a very good returning group of young men who SC has the utmost of confidence in. As well as the rest of the coaching staff. I even believe that RE is beginning to learn that a balanced approach to the Universities business is important. That there are many entities and they all must learn to work together. Why would SC's playing reputation be put on the line? He played and he succeeded. Is he suppost to just go away from something he loves at a place that gave him so much just because he is afraid to fail? SC is one hard working mofo and very thick skinned.
ilovethecats you are an interesting poster. You can be very middle of the road and then throw out something stupid like this. Besides our worst year is behind us and our best is yet to come. If I were a cat fan I would be more worried about SHSU and making it out of the quarter finals than SC and his legacy.
What do the Trojans have to do with this discussion?

   Funny stuff there KMC. Very funny stuff. Since we are focusing on inaccuracies - my best friend had an uncle that used to always tell him to make sure and be careful, " always wear a Condorm". He was dead serious.

I have been thinking about this decision since the original post on this thread.

I know Gragg really wants the HC job, but his downfall is experience. A lot will be riding on how he does with his newly added responsibilities. If he passes with flying colors, he will be top candidate.

It also makes sense to handle it this way. With pending NCAA investigation results still in limbo, it is wise to groom from within, just in case the results are not so favorable It will make for an easier transition after the results. IT also saves us some much needed money, thanks to Engstrom's mishandling of all this.

If the NCAA investigations turns out with very little, and JJ is found innocent. It will help get the GRIZ back on track much quicker. The GRIZ will have more national interest, and it will be a more attractive job. Montana can do a normal coach search, and know by then if any our current coaches are worthy candidates.

Either way, we will be better prepared, and have much better peace of mind, with the decisions that will be made. Considering the circumstances, I honestly feel whoever made this decision is making the right decision now.

IF JJ is found innocent and the NCAA investigation comes back with minor infractions or less, Engstrom better prepare his resume. He will be needing a new job soon thereafter. If, that happens, I honestly want to see Pflugrad return what he started. In the meantime, I wish Coach Gragg the best and hope he passes his test with flying colors.

Pretty much, and this is what I expect to happen! :thumb:

Sounds to me, many fans, players, and faculty are pretty strongly behind Pflugrad. I know O'day was, and some of the reason he was let go too. I am guessing O'day and Engstrom did not see eye to eye on a few things, and Royce strong armed both, wrongly.
