Good, Bad, Ugly - UC Davis

Sorry for the delay I was there live and then I like to watch it back on TV before I post:

Good:
- I actually thought our defense played pretty darn well and definitely gave us a chance to win. I think a lot of us were wondering if the defense had really improved or not, as it was hard to tell after playing a couple of lower end big sky teams. I told myself going in, if we held them to 24 points that would definitely be improved defense. If the offense didn’t put the defense back against the wall with interceptions and time of possession, I think we definitely would’ve been around that 20-24 mark
- The nighttime atmosphere and how it came across the TV screen on ESPN2 was awesome and electric. It sounded so loud there and that series where Cal poly had a couple of false starts and other issues really had that place rocking
- the Griz only had 4 penalties all game which was a marked improvement over previous games
- Junior had a strong game with 6 catches for 92 yards and a TD
- Fontes was next with 4 for 38
- Ryder Myer was all over the place with 17 tackles
- there were some great one-on- one tackles with our corners and safeties
- Loud continues to impress at corner and is playing great for a true freshman
- even though he looked rusty, it was good to see Cole Grossman on the field. He can help us down the stretch

Bad:
- too many turnovers and QBs throwing into tight coverage
- our defense needs to figure out a way to create turnovers against good teams
- the offense has looked downright bad and out of sync for 3 games in a row. And that is exactly the same timeframe that the staff has employed this 2 QB rotation. It’s not working and needs to be scrapped immediately. What are they missing?
- the offense looked awesome on the first drive and then followed up with too many 3 and outs….cant do that against good teams. They had pretty great field position all night long and couldn’t do anything with it.

Ugly:
- the coaching staff trying to get cute with the defensive substitutions and it costing them a penalty on a critical 4th and 4. I believe that drive led to a TD for Davis. That is completely on the coaches

Feel free to add

Good: Defense overall played better, crowd helping with penalties.

Bad: Offense couldn't run the ball to save their life, turnovers.

Ugly: Coaching in general from the 4th down play, pulling Fife while he had the hot hand and some offensive play calling (1st and goal from the half yard line and you go into shotgun?!). They sucked.

Something I noticed……watch how badly the Davis punt return team would abandon the line of scrimmage to set up a return instead. I’m an amateur fan and picked up on it. Why isn’t our staff seeing it. We had a couple 4th and shorts (3-4 yards) where the punter could have faked it and ran for a 1st down.

I was yelling the same thing at the television, but the punter never heard me...oh well

This! Was so noticeable during the game and could have been taken advantage of. One time they all turned their backs quickly and ran, not one player was spying the punter period.

Very good summary. I certainly agree on the D. Again, Davis picked up the first down on 4th and 2, and then took the penalty to g more yards, I believe. Your lack of posting was causing me stress. Ha.

I also noticed this and was yelling at the coaches, of course they don't listen or pay attention to the obvious.

100% on the first one our punter could have walked for the first down.

Let's stir the pot:

Good: the excitement and the good time the fans had for most of the the game

Bad: the university does not give two shits about the fans-it's all about the money they can make from them

Ugly: our coaching being exposed on National TV

Shit there was a 4th and almost 10 that Ty could have taken off for 20 yards passed the first down line. NO ONE was looking at the punter passed about 3 seconds after the ball was snapped. I bet he was thinking, "man I could have ran it there." He should have said fuck it and took off.

I got to watch more of the second half yesterday. Man that is a game we could’ve won.

We were only down six points with 12 minutes left in game when things unraveled. And it all started with that 12 men on the field penalty that led to points. Right after, Ah Yat threw a pick the first series and things went downhill.

The more I watched, I realize the defense actually played a heckuva game. In fact, they only gave a 386 total yards to a pretty darn good offensive unit. Davis was only 6 of 16 on third down.

That is the most frustrating part, if our defense was like last year and we don't pull Fife after drive 2, or hell Grossman makes the catch, we win that game 35-10, easy.
