Just goes to show that we don't always know the entire story....

Great to have him back and on a good track too.
Really good story. Awesome to see that former Griz star and Billings Senior Grad, Colin Dow, was there for John too. We get hung up on football, but there are many other things in life more important. It is wonderful that John was able to get it all worked out!
Go Griz!

These types of struggles get over looked far too much. Schmaing has been through the ringer too but because he puts his hand in the ground some people tend to ignore him with less fanfare then Henderson. Both these young men have really been through some tough times in their young lives AND they still show up on Saturday to play their asses off! They deserve better from all of us STOP talking down any of these young men as they work through their private issues. In the end they do what they do for themselves & their families.

We as fans need to learn to be more appreciative regardless of outcomes as the circumstances are so far beyond comprehension for so many of us! I am a players first guy. John Schmaing...I got YOUR back young man! Go forth & succeed!

I don't care anything about the football part. Its great to hear of a young man getting his mental wellbeing back together. That can be an extremely tough struggle.

Great article. AJ has done a great job so far this season writing articles about hidden struggles Griz stars have faces (this one and Henderson). Very proud to have John as a part of this year's team.

When Bo Harris quit the team to go focus on track, I was critical of his "heart", getting beaten out by a converted fullback and an undersized D-tackle. THEN, I heard the backstory about WHY he quit, about the injury and the weight loss and the struggle to regain his size and strength and felt like a complete tool.

Also, now having a daughter who attends Texas Tech on a dance/pom squad scholarship I see it up close and personal. She's up and at practice every morning at 5:00, and practices every day for 3-4 hours and then performs for 5 hours on Saturday at the games. I see first hand how stressful it can be and what an incredible additional load it is on her time, and the unbelievable amount of drive and determination it takes to WANT to put up with all that--then to add on top of that the personal struggles some of these folks are going through...well, I can't even imagine.
