GO WATCH BASKETBALL

The program is on the rise and this year's team could be very exciting. They work and deserve your support.

Geez, you are so funny, Ursus1. Gonzaga didn't get to where they were over night. It actually took several years. You think the Griz football program got to where it was in one or two year? No, it actually took about 9 years before Read earned his championship season. And for sure, the Griz football team had to take it's lumps. But it was the lumps taken that taught the Griz football team what was needed to get to where they got.

Kennedy is doing close to what Gonzaga did to get where they are. You schedule the best teams that you can. With this schedule, no doubt, the record is going to be poor. But the team is actually better than last year, and far better than they were two years ago. But the schedule is two to three times tougher than any schedule that any previous Griz basketball coach.

And since this team has about the same record as they had two to three years ago, with a schedule two to three times better, this team is two to three times better. Actually, Holst had this team below .500 with a weak schedule.

Therefore, this is a team on the rise.

And the schedule is going to get tougher, too. Next year, Duke will be on the schedule. Plus, the tough schedule will impress potential recruits to come here due to the schedule. When Kennedy goes into the living room, and shows the potential recruit the schedule, that recruit will see Duke.

Heck, after next year, the scheduling will be 3 to 4 times tougher than before Kennedy.

And that is basically the way Gonzaga did it. To be the best, you have to play the best, and take some lumps along the way. Gonzaga took some heavy lumps before they got where they are.

Plus, the games are way more exciting to watch, too. The stronger schedule helps with this quite a bit.

Speaking of Gonzaga, and goin to watch BBall......I got tickets to the UM/Zag game at the Kennel!!!!!!!

DO you have any idea how hard it is to get tickets at the Kennel? Anywho....see ya there........or not.

My God. DUke? That is so cool. I mean we will most likely get slaughtered but Duke, that will be aneat game to see/ listen too. And You're right, playings teams like Duke will help us recruit. When do we play Duke? Is it in some sort of tournamnet like Michigain State last year?

I need a refresher...is basketball the game played with the large orange ball?

By the way, Kennedy NEVER said he was going to do with UM what was done with Gonzaga. Hogan built up some hype, a little much, but not unforgivable.

I, for one, like the direction the program is heading in hoops, though Rial cummings would have us believe that fans aren't entitle to have or state an opinion one way or the other on the direction of a sports program.

I'll admit it myslef, I have never really been into watching the Griz Basketball programs. As most of you that have been with eGriz.com for a while now, I have never covered basketball. This year with the opportunities I have been given I have been attending all the home basketball games (ladies and mens). I have enjoyed watching these games, not quite as much as football, but it is still a blast.

You say that the mens program is only .500, well have you ever thought that maybe it is because the fans aren't there to support them. Fans are a huge part of a teams success!!

On another note, there is another team besides the mens team if it's the record that matters, the Lady Griz are 5-1. That is pretty good (not to some of those football fans) but I think it is damn good! Their only loss is to #2 Texas. (in case you are wondering, that is in all women's college basketball!!)

Now instead of sitting on the couch and watching re-runs of your favorite oprah episode, why don't you all come down and support your Lady and Men's Basketball!!

Go Griz!!

as far as I am concerned, they go to school in Montana, so they are "Monatna Boys", now go support them!

Actually, the date hasn't been set yet. Still in negotiating phase. I am confident that he will get us a date with Duke. Last I heard from another poster, either on this board or the other one, that it is down to 5 dates. Anyway, I believe the news that Kennedy was trying to schedule Duke was in the Missoulian.

Anyway, just may be a good time to go to North Carolina for a vacation.

...

Never mentioned anything about what anybody said. Just on what was being done.

I think action speaks louder than words.

And Yes, Hogan was the one that that was doing the talking. I take that as him giving Kennedy direction. So far, Kennedy is at least making a genuine effort in trying to take the program in the direction that Hogan said, even though some may consider what Hogan said was hype.
So far, Kennedy has proven himself a good scheduler. We would never have had a chance to play some of the schools like Michigan State, Stanford, or Purdue in a non-conference season. The schedule the Griz are playing this year is even more difficult than last year. Wait till we have to play Auburn and SIU on the road. These two schools may be the toughest games of the year, other than Gonzaga.

And, I am very confident in this happening, playing Duke next year. I hope the negotiations do not fail. I may have gone overboard in my first post this thread. But, I have heard that it is just down to setting the date.

just as soon as they rebuild the program with Montana boys just like Reed did!

He is rebuilding this team with Montana boys. I wouldn't use anybody as my avatar if he weren't a Montana boy. Criswell is the goto guy on the team, and a true blue Montana boy.

Next year, Hasquet will be a Griz right from Montana. So why wait until you miss everything. You will miss watching an exciting go for broke player like Criswell play.

TRUEGRIZ- your first post in this thread was right on. I too like the approach Coach Kennedy is taking and realize this is going to take some time. If you take a look around, no Big Sky team is dominating in the pre-season. In fact, only 2 Big Sky teams have winning records at this point. It is a lot more exciting to go to a home game that is against a quality opponent. The sting of walkovers we used to schedule did not help attendance nor did it really help the GRIZ prepare for the conference season.

TrueGriz, my post about the Gonzaga thing was directed at Ursus, your part was right on. :D

and as far as the poster who said "Reed" built a the program with MT boys, you're only part right. Read had players from all over.
many wrs came from the west coast. But like Egriz says if they're playing for UM they ARE Montana boys! It is quit ignorant to think MT Highschools put out enough d1 talent each year to keep the Griz competetive. :-?

So, I am curious as to why you can classify anybody playing for Montana as a "Montana boy", but seemingly most of the Griz fans rip on Montana State for recruiting out-of-state players, specifically California players.

I agree with Chris, if they are playing for our universities, then they become our adopted "Montana boys." Not everyone is so lucky to be from Montana, I am glad that some of these guys get the opportunity to become part of our great state. And I don't care where they come from... not that I don't take a little more pride in seeing a home-grown boy excel at the collegiate level, but that holds true for anywhere.

You caught them there Bozone, the proverbial "hand in the cookie jar". Definately a case of pot...kettle........black. If you think finding good enough montana kids for football, basketball is darn near impossible.

On the Duke thing - I heard it was down to 3 potential dates, and it would be a nationally televised game. Sweet!!!

Kennedy's philosophy is he will play anyone, anywhere.

Cool. If it is going to be televised, I would bet it would be a saturday or sunday afternoon game.

I'm not trying to pick a fight here, gentlemen, so bear with me...

What is so great about going on TV and getting annihilated by 40-50 points? I don't like it one bit. I think the players get too caught up in trying to get a play on SportsCenter, they lose focus, and the end result is a loss of confidence. Besides, what recruit watches a game where the final score is Duke 110, Montana 55 and thinks to himself, "gee, I might want to play at UM"?

I think smaller schools such as ours need to put teams on the schedule that will provide a challenge, yet will also provide at least a chance of winning. Play schools like a Gonzaga, maybe Wazzou, UW, and Oregon State. There is even a huge difference between top 5 teams and top 6-25 teams, evidenced by the Griz beating Stanford last year. I think the opportunity to go do exactly that is what our schools should be striving for, not some token blow-out loss to Duke. JMO

I would much rather play Duke on National Television and get spanked then play Washington State and beat them. You have to take some beatings along the way before you get better and learn from them. I love what Coach Kennedy is doing! He is putting us on the map, getting us recognized. I dont care what you say, any recruit is going to want to play Duke on National Television then play Washington State. That is a once in a lifetime opportunity for kids playing in the Big Sky Conference. These games will only get you better. To be the best you have to play the best!
