2. football became the cool thing (especially after dd and the national championship), and wash-griz the place to be;
3. blaine taylor's problems, including the drinking issue, and that one diastrous recruiting class where all three freshman recruits essentially washed out and we became dependent on last-minute emergency jaycee recruits, a la a new mexico state;
4. the hiring of our very own peter principle (don holst), who simply couldn't recruit like kennedy, krysko and tinkle, or coach like krysko, followed by the hiring of pat kennedy who couldn't coach either (but did at least put us on the right path with his recruiting);
5. the renovation of the field house, which sent fans off to timbuktu for a year whence they never returned;
6. the rise of the football program (needs to be mentioned twice since it's my theory great football programs seldom co-exist with great basketball programs, and vice versa);
7. our failure to hire argh! as assistant coach and asian recruiting coordinator, when by now we could have had three yao mings and a dim sum concession stand;
8. moving the students off the floor.

as we mark the turnaround on our way to reclaiming the glory days and establishing ourself as a presence on the national basketball scene, let us not forget the woman whose name i have forgotten but who as interim a.d. hired krysko when i personally thought him to be a bad choice. i believe she still lives in missoula, and i wish she would now rise and take a nice bow.

UM Hoops is at a crossroads-it can keep ascending if it is supported
or it can be left by the side of the road if UM doesn't give it the
necessary support. There is no reason why the students could
not be put back at courtside like every other school. Tinks is very
capable-Griz men have been to dance 2years in a row-its possible
that this could continue with the talent available. Comparing todays atmosphere to years ago has some issues-there was less
entertainment avilable to people. Now many games are during
the middle of the week. Football is enjoying sucess but I haven't
seen the Griz take out any D1 schools like the hoops program
accomplished. I think that the Griz mens hoops are about at the
stage Gonzaga was a few years ago when coaches left. Montana
is a great university and Missoula is a great town-the hoops program is poised to put the school on the map. PAC-10 schools
are now ducking the Griz due to RPI. Get a clue-paying the head
hoops coach 100K with a one year contract-is this south buffalo
chip or a major university? Its a shame the enthusiasm isn't
there-maybe thats why Larry left?

Such as what William James, head of the Psychology Department at Harvard University might have alluded to in referencing a 'Pragmatic Survival of the fittest' (Universal Justice based upon Reason; like in Jean-Jacques Rousseaus' 'Social Contract') & Talbot Mundy in his 'pragmatic adventurer' epitomized by the novelized character of a James Schyler Grimm (All fair in love & war the stupidest statement ever made, etc.)

Sorry for the philosophizing on a thread dedicated to something like in sports. It always bothers me somewhat whenever someone cites historical events as cyclical; wherein is freedom of the will then?

i find it perfectly "reason"-able based on my experience in life to say what goes up generally comes down, what goes around comes around, tides ebb and flow, moons come and go, politcial parties and stock markets rise and fall, and athletic dynasties whether college or pro do not last forever while today's loser is tomorrow's powerhouse.

Good Basketball and Football can co-exist. The Basketball success here isn't going to affect football. It will help fill seats for basketball.

Really I don't see Montana ever becoming any kind of Major power in Basketball unless they go on a run like Gonzaga. They need to play a very very tough out of conference schedule like Gonzaga does and beat those teams. With our present lineup of OOC games and being in the Big Sky we could go 30-2 and we'd still be a 10th seed.

Ronbo there is a difference between football & basketball. 1st let me say I am not a proponent of moving to I-A nor do I want to turn this into that kind of thread. However no matter how many championships we win in I-AA football were are still going to be considered weaker by the big schools. Also how many people outside of I-AA cities can actually name last years playoff participants, probably about 1%. But if the Griz hoops run continues & we can somehow come to equal what Gonzaga has been able to accomplish or even equal what George Mason did this year, then BAM the whole country knows Montana. I would say its say to say that even the Grizs 1st round defeat of Nevada this year did more to get our name in the national spotlight than our 2 football championships have.

Quite frankly I don't think basketball is as fun to watch as football, Somebody had to say it for crying-out-loud!!! With that being said, I HAVE gone to a few Bball games. The games are ok, but nothing compared to FB games. Also, I don't have the luxury, like the wine and cheese crowd, of going to games in the middle of the week; some of us poor saps work shifts other than 9-5pm....Anyhow, I don't think there's anything wrong with our BB program, nor do I see anything about it going down the tube. So, I really don't see what in the world some of you are talking about when you say we are slipping.. hell we've just had a great couple of years and with the talent that I've heard we have coming in we'll probably have even more success in the future, so stop being so pessimistic already.... arty:

WCC wasn't any better, if at all, when Gonzaga started it's accendancy. Gonzaga got into the national limelight which made the conference look better, and helped other teams in the conference to improve.

Same thing could and should happen in the Big Sky if Montana becomes the next Gonzaga. If Montana becomes the next Gonzaga, the national notariety should help the reputation of the Big Sky Conference, just like Gonzaga did for the WCC.

It is difficult at best to get in the national limelight when we play our conference games against Big Sky teams that don't have a national ranking. Teams in the ACC, for example, usually are ranked in the top 20 or better, thus when they beat each other, it enhances their national ranking. Wine and cheese crowd? For goodness sakes that is rediculous. I grew up in Helena and if there was a game on Thursday night we were there. I remember getting home at midnight and getting up the next morning to go to school. You may not have a job that accomodates the game schedules but don't go crying about it and trying to make yourself feel better by saying that the folks that do go to the games are wine and cheesies.
