Glen Dean 5-10 Roosevelt HS Seatle

Glen Dean is 5-10 speedster point guard from Roosevelt High School in Seattle Washington has been offered by the Griz, and is heavily leaning towards the Griz over Montana State, UC Santa Barbara, Portland State, Pacific, and Seattle U (moving to D-1). He is rated any where from the #2 to #6 senior point Guard in Washington. Tinkle was the very first college coach (starting when Tinkle was only an assistant at UM) to recruit him and he likes Tinkle a lot. He has said he will not commit to any school until after he has visited that school. I understand that Montana is one of his first schedule visits. Unless something goes wrong, I would expect him to commit on his visit to UM.

On a related note the Griz are also recruit 6-2 Sean Stockton out of Spokane Wa. at the point. Like Dean Stockton is rated any where from 2nd to 6th in the state at that position. The difference between the two has more to do with the flavor of point guard you like. Dean is more of a speedster water-bug, penetrator while Stockton is a bigger stronger shooter.

I'd take Dean over Stockton, it would be nice to have a guard that's not afraid to take it to the hoop. I hope we get him.

Looks to me like Tinks can more than hold his own against Huse when it comes to recruiting. :thumb:

no question tinks can recruit. but i wonder, while there are times it pays off to recruit a kid early and form a solid personal relationship, might there be other times when this blinds you to the realities of a player's talent, or lack thereof? just asking...i wouldn't want to be a recruiter. i think it's what drove krysko from the college game.

Valid observation City. As you know, Krysko spoke often about his dislike of recruiting. I think your point about establishing a relationship with a kid early can be a real Catch-22 because it may be the only hope you have if the kid blossoms late in his HS career and the "name" schools get on him like what may well happen to the recent bobcat recruit who verballed early. On the flip side, if he doesn't get any better where are you. That is why Coaches get paid the big money right?

In places like Idaho, Montana , the Dakotas, and even Washington I would tend go with Tinkle's and Huse's opinion of a recruits talent than Rivals or Scout. For example, If you want to even be considered to be put on the list on Scout.com, they have to have been seen by Greg Hick. One guy, based out of California, if he does not see you play and notices you there is no way to get on the list. Back in the early summer of 2006 I personally gave Hicks a handful of player that he might consider putting on the list, that list included Bobby Howard and Derek Selvig. All of those players eventually signed with D-1 schools but only a few made the Scout list, and only the players that Hicks saw play. In some cases he only saw them play once so that one impression is what determined the stars they got. In Tinkle and Huse's case they make it a point to see these out of the way players games multiple times a year, furthermore they have 3 other recruiter they will send to give an opinion of.

Another example is the Griz own Brian Qvale. Hicks was at an AAU tourney and was between games that he wanted to scout so he decided to grab something to eat in the gym before the game he was there to scout. The game that happened to be playing at that time featured Brain and Hicks took notice. If Hicks would have gone out to lunch instead of eating in the stands, Brian would have been a no star / no mention at scout.com. Of course none of this really and truly has any bearing on Brian's talent, and Tinkle would have signed him in either case.

I mean this as a compliment so please take it as such. Do you ever wonder if you missed your true calling in life as much of a Basketball Jones as you are? I am pretty sure I know what you do in real life and am sure you are quite capable, however it strikes me that your passion is basketball. Did you ever think about chasing Hoops as your life's work? Afterall, they say it isn't work if you truly love what you are doing. just my :twocents:

i believe i know too what mslacat does, and i believe also that passion, like athletic ability, is transferable, and that it's quite possible mslacat pursues his chosen profession with the same passion he does his avocation, basketball. in fact, i'd bet on it.

I do not think I have hidden the fact I am an architect, at least on the Bobcatnation board. As far as changing professions, I have two kids still in primary school, I can not afford to take the pay cut, plus I am pretty good at do my real job.
