Alright Griz fans - the episode is live, yesterday we had a little over an hour chat with Kent and he explained how the opt-in house settlement will work for Montana. We get to many (not all) of your questions as well including info on the practice bubble, scheduling, and ongoing additions/changes to the Big Sky Conference. I know it's shorter than most of our GFP fans like, but it was super informative and fun to do!

You said that like it was a bad thing 😉

Very informative. I knew most of the house settlement stuff already but it was good to get some clarification from him on that stuff. As a scheduling junkie, I enjoyed that piece of the conversation. I figured we were gonna end up playing a conference game week 1 on 8/29 next year and Haslam confirmed that. Kinda made it sound like we're gonna be at home on 8/29 by the way he was dropping hints. He also teased a fun non-conference matchup for Football that they're hoping to announce in the next couple weeks (maybe NDSU or SDSU?). I'll be curious to see what that is. Also gave some Basketball schedule updates but I'll post those on the other board.

His comments on the bubble were interesting. If they ship it back to the manufacturer, I hope they can get it back in time for winter. That would be devastating but I'm sure if they gotta wait until next year to ship it back, then that's probably not the end of the world.

Good pod guys! I hope he's willing to keep doing these with you every now and then!

Most of the questions!? I swear to God, if I listen and I don’t know wether he prefers sunrises or sunsets, ima b pissed!!

😁😎

Well I was gonna cut you guys some slack cus Kent kept ramblin’ on about revenue sharing and roster limits but then came a 20 min discussion on urban deer. Then you were givin one last chance to hit him with it and didn’t. My only guess why you would avoid it is cus you let him screen the questions and he deemed that one too personal. But he slipped. He got casual at the end and leaked he’s playlist. He’s gotta be a sunset man with a playlist like that.

All jokes aside, super cool you guys get to do interviews like this and share them with us. Thanks again for the GFP. Definitely my fav of all the Griz pods.😊👍.

Great pod as always, men.

Disappointed you didn't ask him about the bsc decisions negatively impacting UM, though. He's already on the record saying as much, and I truly think a further conversation along those lines would be enlightening. We can't have you guys goin' all Colterish on us, now.

Also, I'm just going to leave my first question for the next pod here now:

James, what did you think of the drink-cart girl?

So remind us again why the FCS schools are doing the opt-in? I can't recall the reasons or benefits. Not one FCS school has money to revenue share. They all operate at a loss and are subsidized by their states, to my knowledge. I guess they are stuck paying their share of the settlement, whether they opt in or not. Can any of them afford more scholarships, or what's the point there? The coaches can openly call the shots on money/NIL-type stuff, but I assume they were already doing that. In-house NIL is clearly subject to Title IX, I would assume. I must be missing something.

You would be correct to say that there is very little money to share at the FCS schools. Also, FCS football programs have always had the option of splitting grants to make the money stretch farther. Opting in, as I understand it, allows a school to split basketball grants in the same manner. I also understand that it will give schools more leeway in using donated monies for stipend/cost of living funds. NIL can still be an outside influence and cooperatives can still operate. Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of that.

Hoops - listen to the pod haha

- easier to understand / maintain roster limits

- “designated player” rosters allowing you to exceed current maximum of 105

- not subject to title 9

Exactly and the first thing UM does is hire someone to generate revenue or something??

I expected a lot of things in this pod. Kent usually plays it cool and close to the vest so I find him reasonable if not boring for toeing a line usually. However, I didn’t expect him to go all bloodsport in a move akin to a UFC fights on the White House lawn and call for a curfew while the streets of Missoula are littered with blood thirsty wildcats to fix a civic issue. And then to say he could make money off such a thing! 😮Then he brought it back to the level I expected with his love for Curt Smith. Talk about whiplash.

Just some perspective - from Nebraska Athletic Department:

"At Nebraska, we have many things to be proud of, and one of those pride points is the strong financial model built over the decades that allows us to enter this new world with such high expectations. Nebraska is unique as one of a small handful of athletic departments that does not receive any funds from the institution or the state, does not assess a student fee, pays the full cost of our scholarships back to the University and, for the third consecutive year, will provide a $5 million subsidy to the academic enterprise on the UNL campus.

Our strong financial position is the result of many things, including fan support at our games and philanthropy from our donors. We rank #2 among all FBS schools in attendance for women’s sporting events (Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer and Softball) and #7 nationally when Football, Men’s Basketball and Baseball are included. The Huskers Athletic Fund raised over $71 million in gifts last year for the first time ever, a testament to the passion and loyalty of our supporters."
