stein said, people don't change, but each generation sees differently. how true. hula hoops, pet rocks, pink flamigoes, even volkswagen bugs--you can't seriously revive what belongs to one generation, cause the next one just doesn't give a damn. so with the zoo, its legends, stories and traditions. micheal ray richardson? micheal ray had finished his pro career before most college kids today were born. potatoes? idaho isn't in our conference any more. the gulf war protest? which gulf was that again? shattered backboards? technology fixed that problem years ago. dribble dribble, bounce, bounce? so what? maybe we old fogies thought that was cool. kids today say, what do you mean by "cool" anyway? you mean bad, dawg? (wait, i'm still a generation behind...)
i sometimes think all this talk about the zoo is even antithetical to the creation of a new basketball tradition at montana, because any real revival will depend on this generation, their anecdotes, their stories, their legends. it may already have started with will cherry and kareem jamar, with the shaking of the basket that made national news, with wayne tinkle going up in the stands to greet fans. who knows? but i do know it's up to each new generation to carry the torch, and if it happens here, that torch will burn with far different colors from ours.
