Georgia Southern/App State

Looks like Georgia Southern is probably going to win the Sunbelt with App State near the top as well. Both will be bowl eligible. Nothing nearly as exciting as having a playoff system like we do, but nice to see these former FCS powers doing well after their transition.

Then there is the year former SoCon member Marshall is having....

It has been clearly stated here many times that you cannot have success when you move up from FCS. Even poster child Boise St. is having a down year with the new coach. Wyoming hung with them for 47 seconds Saturday night. Must be that Bohl influence in Laramie starting to cook.

App St and Georgia Southern aren't eligible for bowls due to moving up. GSU could get into a New Years Day bowl if the committee thinks they're better than Marshall, Boise, and Colorado State.

Interesting. I thought that that was only in effect last year. ESPN shows them both as bowl eligible, must be a typo on their part. So what, after a move up you have 2 years of not being bowl eligible? Ouch, would make it hard to be a fan for me.

Actually, they do have a shot at a 2014 bowl -- with a waiver, which is not out of the question.

While the most popular question this college football season has been “Who’s in,” with regard to the new College Football Playoff, it is easy to forget the rest of the bowl games will be played too and need teams to fill those spots. Heading to mid-November a total of 51 teams have clinched bowl eligibility, and 23 more schools could join them with one more win. With 38 bowl games and 51 teams ready for postseason play, that leaves 25 bowl spots still to fill. With a few weeks to play, the odds are still good all 25 vacancies will be accounted for, but the pressure is on for a handful of teams to finish the season strong.

There are 51 teams currently bowl eligible, but that number could easily be increased to 52. Georgia Southern has been playing very well in its first year in the Sun Belt Conference and already has enough wins for typical bowl eligibility. However, because this is its first season playing FBS football, Georgia Southern is technically ineligible for postseason play until 2015. Georgia Southern could still go bowling this season though if a waiver for postseason play is approved. If there are bowl spots to fill, this would increase the likelihood of Georgia Southern going to a bowl game this season.
To (re)interpret: There are now so damn many bowls, a "bad" year could have them struggling to fill all the slots. I do not see them making an exception for App State. However, I'd be mildly surprised if they don't grant a waiver for Ga So, particularly when they thump LA-Monroe (4-7) in their final game, at home. That will give them a (far more than "respectable") 9-3 record.
