so far, 60% of you think the griz will win the conference but this is truly over-the-top delusional. with kamaar graduated, seyfert apparently hurt and chavez sidelined indefinitely, we have only four bona fide post players. one (strait) is a sophomore, and the remaining three (van vliet, sharp and hasquet) are freshmen. it absolutely defies objective reality to think a college team with only one battle-tested sophomore and three rookies up front could win anything short of an intramual championship.

oh, these kids be good...no question about that. but this year? without seyfert? without chavez? get a grip!

Heaven be it for me to argue against your point but I will say yes depth of Big men is a seriuos problem for a coach/program that is known as a Big man coach, but if you look at the Strait, Crizwell, Dhouly (I keep distroying his name)and Martin you are looking at four players who legitametly could be first team all conference this year (Just not all at the same time). That is a great core base of talent to start with. I don't know of any team except the Cats that can match those top 4 (I know I am Bias). Put a great role player in Mathews and a couple nice JC Recruits in the mix and hey a really good coach and it really makes you wonder??

I pick the Griz a real tenitive 2nd. As a Bobcat fan, though, I know they will be ready to play come conference. I think they will have the talent to knock anyone in the league down on any given night, but I don't know if they will have the depth it takes to go on the extended winning streaks it takes to win the league.

What does Chavez have anything to do with the big man picture? He hasn't played the last two years and probably won't play this year.

So we lost Kamarr and now Seyfert is out. Kamarr was a great player, but the lack of defensive intensity/effort killed the team at times. I really wish John could play this season because it looked like he was ready to go, but they're going to have to pick up the slack without him.

Montana State definitely appears to be the favorite to win the conference. The Griz have to be right there behind them with the returning core they have as well. Size has always been an issue at UM, but that has never stopped them from competing in the past.

The fact is that you can win the BSC without a dominant big man.
 
well, it just got worse. i see from friday's missoulian that hasquet has a stress fracture in his leg, and won't participate in opening drills. no mention how long he'll be out. down to three bona-fide big men.

A key issue, given our lack of big men, is how long Hasquet will be out. Does anyone have any info on this? I also wonder if Seyferts eligibility runs out before the 2006-2007 season. In other words, is he eligible for and if so, will he receive a medical redshirt?
 
From what I have been told:

Because of the transfer from St. Louis, he is not eligible for a medical redshirt. The talk I have heard makes it seem like he will not have a scholarship for next year.
 
Um...not like I'm saying the two teams are totally comparable in quality of play/coaching/style. But Illinois made it all the way to the national championship game (right? Or was is it the final 4) with no dominant center but a team built around speed, 3 point shooting, defense and perimiter play.

The NCAA allows a player 5 years to complete 4 years of elligblity. That said though, in some rare cases the have granted a 6th year of elligiblity for health/injury related reasons. Routinely every year coaches will apply for these "hardship exceptions" but I would say 90% are turned down. I have never figured out how or why the ones that are approved are done so. If I was Seyfert and/or Krysco I might give it a try. From everything I have heard Seyfert is a great student, and the injury happened before the season started. It sound possible he maybe granted the year... well maybe 10% possible.
 
True Re/Max......but look what happened to Illinois when they had to go up against a big guy in Sean May. The small ball is a favorite of mine but we better hope that there are no Sean Mays that the Griz face this year.
 
The GRIZ hoops team was introduced at halftime today (loss to EWU) :crybaby: Hasquet was wearing a walking cast and boot.

One more time; does anyone have any indication how long Hasquet will be out?
 
Hasquet will be back very soon. Any day now. He's been in the boot for a little over a month now and is about ready to be done with it and ready to get back to playin.
