MBBALL Garret Dutro commits

Hopefully his game translates to div 1.
That’s what I worry about as well cause the recent JC kids haven’t fared well for us. Dutro is a D1 bounce back though as he started his career at Green Bay where he was teammates with Amari Jedkins. I will say that he’s got way better numbers than just about any JC kid I can remember us bringing in. 8 rebounds per game is damn impressive! You can’t even find big guys who average that, let alone Guards!

I like the numbers, but why…when there are 37377 players in the portal, do they keep going after JC and take chances on good D2 kids? Depth maybe? I mean I don’t understand this

It’s a gamble for sure. You take a guy like this for his upside while continuing to mine the portal. Dutro could be a great player, but right now he looks like safety net in the event we can’t land some of our top portal targets.

They have 8 roster spots to fill. Not 1, not 2, but 8 now. They had one of their key guys who they though was going to be one their key contributors for next year poached by Oregon State. Dutro is a solid add. If he can come in and contribute minutes, it is going to be a clear bonus because they didn't get any level of support behind Thompson last year. Plus Dutro is a player the staff is familiar with. The kid can play a bunch of different position. The first video was when Dutro was in HS and he played against... Courtney Anderson....Jr. The other is a combo set of highlights from over the last year. He's good get. Good shooter. Capable of creating his own perimeter shot.

Moreover, they don't have the budget to really distribute the funds in the way they did last year to 'keep' Money and bring in Betts, Anderson Jr. and Kepley. There just isn't that type of self replenishing NIL funds. You don't need to replace Money in all in one shot. They need to be deeper 1-10 than they were last year and the staff knows it. If Dutro is the basement talent they bring in and hit what they need for all 8 roster positions, they are going to be okay.

I'm excited about this being one of our commits! He has a strong upside. Tall SG (or Wing) who is a proven scorer, high-percentage three point shooter, and rebounder. All depends on how he is on the D side (I have no idea one way or other). Welcome!!!

Phil Jackson, Krysko, or Bobby Knight I ain't, but just on paper, I like the idea of a 6-6 guard because MJ was/is 6-6 unless he shrunk, and yes, I am aware that Garret is not MJ.

( Interesting side note on Bobby Knight. My high-school friend who is Crow and I ran into each other about 20 years ago in Downtown Billings and had lunch @ The Montana Brewing Company. Fred told me that he had taken Bobby Knight on his drift boat fly fishing on the blue-ribbon Big Horn River east of Billings below the Yellowtail Damn out of Fort Smith--Fred worked/works as a guide on the river.

Fred told me they were having 0 luck as they drifted early AM down the Big Horn, Bobby Knight looked at him in the back of the boat and yelled at him, " Fred, if we don't start catching some damn fish, I am throwing you out of the boat ! " Fred told me that they fortunately soon caught a few nice brown trout, he laughed, and told me " Coach Knight was just kidding."

I told him I wasn't so sure about that ! )

We hit a huge home run when we signed Kai Johnson out of a lower division he had pretty big numbers for that division and so does this dude let’s hope he translates like Johnson. It will be another home run.
