Can the Cats goal is to raise awareness and collect canned foods for The Missoula Food Bank. This is a competition between the Grizzlies and the Bobcats that begins November 3. Help us "Can the Cat's" and defeat hunger in the process.

I've started communication with the Missoula Food Bank to credit online donations to the food drive. Monetary donations general have a multiplier effect so that a dollar donated counts more than an actual purchase. No information is available yet online.

Missoula Food Bank: food donations that pack the most nutritional punch are: Canned Meats, Chili, Beans, Veggies, Soup, Whole-Grain Pasta, Brown Rice, Peanut Butter, Flour and Olive Oil. GOOD NEWS FOR US...they also pack weight and would make your Can The Cats donation REALLY COUNT!

2012 Collection Dates: Nov. 3-17

In conjunction with the annual Griz-Cat football game, our office hosts a friendly food drive competition with UM-Missoula. Our campus strives to collect more food for our local food banks than UM.

The 2011 Griz-Cat Food Drive collected $58,000 pounds of food [$58,000 pounds? MSU after all], plus more than $31,000 in monetary donations to benefit the Gallatin Valley Food Bank and Livingston Food Pantry. The University of Montana and Missoula raised 18,963 pounds of food for the Missoula Food Bank.

(Question: When is the Griz announcement? No wonder Bozeman wins every year.)

Can the Griz food drive launches Nov. 3

Montana State University, October 22, 2012

The 13th annual Can the Griz Food Drive, an off-field competition between Montana State University and the University of Montana to see which school can collect the most donations for their local county food banks, begins Nov. 3.

The competition ends on Nov. 17 at the conclusion of the first quarter of the Brawl of the Wild football game between MSU and U of M, this year at the University of Montana. The winner of the competition will be announced during the third quarter.

Organizers of the drive ask that nonperishable food donations be taken to collection locations throughout Bozeman to support those in need in Gallatin County. A list of participating locations can be found at http://www.montana.edu/engagement/programs/can-the-griz" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

Bobcat supporters can designate their contribution to MSU by telling the Gallatin Valley Food Bank or collection location host that their donation is for the Can the Griz Food Drive. Donations can also be made online at http://www.gallatinvalleyfoodbank.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (http://www.gallatinvalleyfoodbank.org/2012/10/can-the-griz-food-drive-2/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).

For more information, or to host a collection box, please contact Joe Webster at 994-7571, or send an email to [email protected].

Can the Griz is coordinated by the MSU Office of Activities and Engagement and Gallatin Valley Food Bank.
