How is it that the Lady Griz can shoot 38 of 40 from the stripe last night and the men look like Shaq trying to knock over milk bottles at the county fair from the free throw line?

Hey Robin, how about a little help here?

I am not trying to stick up for the Men's FT shooting because it needs to improve even though they are 4th in the BSC. There are some reasons why the LG stats are much higher though. In a nutshell Mandy Morales.

I just checked the BSC stats and found the LG were 2nd in the BSC as a team shooting 74% for the season. They willl likely be #1 after 76% against Northridge and 94% last night. They would be leading the BSC Men as well. NAU is currently #1 at 72%, while the Griz men are 4th at 65%. I think 70% should be the minimum level a team should be at.

One reason there is a difference is that the LG perimeter players are shooting the majority of the FT's, whereas the post players for UM shoot more FT's than the perimeter players. On the women's side Mandy Morales has shot over 100 free throws and hits nearly 90%. Mandy has attempted 3x as many attempts as anyone else on the team. Brittany Lohman and Tammy Guardipee are the post players for the LG. Brittany is 18-32 for .563% while Tammy is 19-28 for .679%. (last 2 games not included)

For the men, Andrew Strait has shot almost 2x as many as anyone on the team. He is at .522 % which is 10 percentage points below his league leading FG %. Kyle Sharp is also a certified bricklayer from the line at .458. Even though he hasn't gotten the minutes he has shot nearly as many FT's as Hasquet has. Rundles is at 83%, Dlouhy, Martin, Ellis, and Chavez are at 75%. The team percentage would go up quickly if Strait and Sharp get their numbers up.

Or our guards could penetrate and do a little better job of getting to the line. Like in the ORU game, it wasn't that we were just missing foul shots, we were not getting to the line enough.

Good point, especially as cold as everyone was from the perimeter at the time. Hopefully this is reviewed in practice and film sessions.

Your point about FT's is well taken. One wonders how much work
is done one this in practice? This far into the season one would
assume considerable. Strait shot 90% in high school-maybe the
Griz should bring in his highschool coach. He was also deadly from
3ball land.

If the Chicago Bulls are using that guy, they better can his ass because the Bulls are 24th out of 30 teams in the NBA in FT %.

So I read this and go to check stats on FT% because I'm pretty sure that PSU is the worst in the BSC.

Oh dear, the BSC is pretty bad all around at FT shooting. :-(
