Former MSU athlete pleads no contest to assault

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) -- A former Montana State University basketball player facing murder charges has pleaded no contest in a separate assault case.

Branden Miller entered the pleas Wednesday to misdemeanor assault and criminal mischief charges. He was not ordered to pay any fines and received credit for time served.

Miller is accused of kicking in the door to his then-girlfriend's bedroom in April 2006. Witnesses said they called police after Miller punched a hole in the wall and began throwing things.

Prosecutors said he got angry at his then-girlfriend over a cell phone call.

Miller is scheduled to go on trial in January 2008 on charges of murder, kidnapping and tampering with evidence in the June 2006 death of suspected drug dealer Jason Wright. John Lebrum, a former MSU football player, also faces a trial on the same charges.

The body of Wright, 26, was found in a field off Huffine Lane in Bozeman. He died of gunshot wounds, and was suspected of being a cocaine dealer.
