Fighting Sioux Reborn?

I'm a geologist, not a lawyer, but it seems to me if they are saying that this decision is applicable to the Redskins, then I don't see why it would not be the same for UND. Perhaps the NCAA is not considered a government entity?

Love the idea, especially since it was Fighting Sioux when I went to school there. However, we are the Fighting Hawks, and it would take a ton to change that.

First, we have to report to the NCAA, not the US government. And the NCAA plays host to quite a few liberal activists that use there position as a platform. Not trying to turn it political, but it is obvious that the NCAA operates as its own type of government. Just look at how they punish rule violations at small schools vs. big schools.

Second, I think school administration and leaders like being out of the controversial discussion. UND was there for a long time, and while it was a sad fight to lose, it has basically taken its course. Ultimately, even if the NCAA took a complet 180 and said respectful use of Native American names and imagery would be allowed in accordance with the federal ruling, I don't think UND as a school or businsess would jump at the chance to switch the name back. Doing so would bring good and bad media attention. It would bring increased apparel revenues. But you would always have to deal with the activists.

Only way it would ever happen would be with the NCAA changing their position. A TON of alumni support to change the name. A TON of money. And it would probably depend who was president of the University at the time. It would definitely not be a guaranteed change.

I continue to call them the Sioux, especially for hockey. But as it doesn't appear to be changing, I'm trying to adapt to the Hawk name a little more. I'm not crazy about it, and I think they would be more successful if they added some alternative logos. It is what it is at this point. I'm trying to focus my energy more on the product we put out there; which has been trending up in F-Ball and B-Ball, which at least makes being a fan enjoyable.

Per the US Supreme Court, the roadblock is now irrelevant legally.

Well, the tribe in North Dakota actually did approve the use of the name. The other tribe, which is mostly in South Dakota and spills over into North Dakota would not allow their people to vote because the leaders didn't want it to pass.

Just saying that even if the NCAA said tomorrow they didn't care, I don't see the school leadership wanting any controversy. Regardless, I still love my Sioux gear.

As someone who is part native, i've never found the Fighting Sioux offensive, but i'm not going to lie the Cleveland Indians and Washington Redskins has always bothered me.
