I feel good about the team and game.
The Griz have kept improving each week since NAU. Hitting on all cylinders later in season. McDowell has really developed. The team could have played better against Furman and gotten a good lead, but at least the team rallied to come from behind, despite some adversity (including a pick and several bad calls by refs). As Bobby says, good teams find ways to win games. Great teams win when they aren’t playing well.
The D has been outstanding and is crushing the rush. Mistakes on 2 plays caused the slant for long TD and long QB run. Furman has 282 yards of TO. Outside of those long 2 plays: Furman’s O averaged 1.86 per play. Passing average was 7.8 per catch and 2.56 per pass. 1.28 per carry.
Obviously, NDSU is very good and has gotten on a roll. After losing 3 conference games, they seem to have figured it out. However, 3 straight playoff games on the road wears teams down, and rumors of players being offered big NIL money to leave and the head coach already accepting a new job, are distracting. Griz with extra day off this week. I hope their coach gets to start his USC job on Sunday. I hope the fans can put together some USC cheers at the game. Even U-S-C.
The Griz seem to be getting some players back, and it wouldn’t surprise me if there are more. Could we be so lucky to get back an o-lineman or two. Having no. 96/Nuce back was terrific last week, and he had some good plays.
I see that Miller is leading the nation in completion percentage (74.5%). He’s listed at 6'1", 213, is very good, and his completion rate and efficiency rating (173) are very good, but he didn’t throw well against the Cats. 6-13 for 78 yards. (For season: 194-267-4, which averages about 14-19; and by comparison, McDowell's efficiency rating is 146) But the Bison rushed for 296 against Cats, which probably reduced the need to pass. Cats could have won that game. TO was 513 for Cats and 374 for Bison. So, based only on that game, and comparing to Griz/Cat, that looks pretty good for Griz.
36 sacks for NDSU is very good. 18 picks for NDSU on season. Their D is tough. Their fullback, an o-lineman, a LB, and a d-back. were first team all-conference. The QB was 2d team. I see that he made Steele’s 4th team all-American.
The Griz don’t have a bunch of stars, and perhaps just 2, but they are playing very well as a team, working hard, focused, listening to the coaches, and focusing on their 1/11th. Hill is quietly playing very well, including at star quality.
I have confidence that T. Hauck and Bradford have put together a great game plan. I assume the players will execute it very well.I think NDSU’s O has similarities to the Cats’.
The Griz D is very special because they have some many walk-ons and Montana kids. So many of them worked themselves in the depth chart and are now finally getting their chance to shine. The coaches have done a wonderful job.
The crowd will be extremely loud. UM could make some mistakes, but I don't see the team having a bad game. The weather doesn’t look like a factor. I think the Griz will go toe to toe with the Bison and the Griz will win in a hard fought battle. It should be a great day. If the Griz win, downtown will be wild.
